Last week I took delivery of a King Kutter L-48-40-XB Kutter from the local TSC. They had special ordered it for me after the last one on the lot had been sold.
Got the thing assembled over the weekend and tried using it to mulch up the leaves on the lawn. Actually did pretty well behind the B7610 if I kept the RPMs up.
Decided to remove the blades to put a sharper edge on them and realized I didn't know how to get them off. On my unit, there's no hole in the deck to permit access to the blade bolt nuts. I could swear the unit TSC had on the lot in September had an access hole in the deck, but I did look at a couple of other kutters that day and may be mistaken. At the time, I was quite interested in how the blades were attached and what it would take for removal.
Checked the KK site and found the XB Kutter manual. It made no mention of blade removal technique and, in the blow up of the kutter, did not show any access hole in the deck.
Emailed KK to ask what the recommended blade removal procedure is. They said the stump jumper has to be removed to access the blade bolt nuts and remove the blades. This kind of surprised me. I think it means the kutter has to be tipped on its side (or front) and held there while I get in with a wrench and a hammer to remove the stump jumper. I don't expect the stump jumper to just pop off once I've loosened the nut. Can anyone else confirm this approach?
I'm surprised I overlooked this point when I checked out the kutter earlier. Owning two larger Woods brush hogs, I'm well aware that blade removal can be a PITA; but both those units have deck access holes and the blade bolt retainers are easily removed. Could this be a recent design change? Am I talking to the wrong person? Should I have paid more and gotten a Woods?
