Last night I picked up a King Kutter box blade from the local TSC for some road/lot leveling work I have been doing with my Kioti LK3054xs.

Not having used this particular piece of equipment before, and given the level of technical expertise available at TSC these days, I am at a loss on what I may be doing wrong.

There are no setup or use instructions provided with this particular implement, nor are any available on the King Kutter website. The problem I am having is that after assembling the 3Pt mounting system, as it appears it should be in the "brochure" I was provided, the top link pin is WAY too short to work properly. The standard 4.5" pin doesn't even reach through both sides of the mount, let alone give me room to lock it in. This also allows the pin about an inch of room to flop around. Far too much, IMHO.

My thought is that the spacer provided is a bit too long and needs to be shortened. I've tried assembling the top connection with the back arms on the outside, but they do not attach due to the angles involved.

Is this unusual? I am thinking of taking some measurements and cutting the spacer to allow a bit of play in the top link pin area (1/4" or so) and then assembling it. I thought I would post to get some opinions before I take the saw and grinder to my new implement. I will try to post some pictures tonight, I am sure that will clarify things a bit.

Thanks for any information,

KiotiOrange

Agri-Supply sells 5.5" pins for just this reason. I always use the longer pins, even if they are a little long and slide side to side. I am sure TSC sells a longer pin too. The Agri-Supply price is only $0.99 each.

MadReferee,

That was my first inclination, however, wouldn't that allow for excessive side to side play in the top link area? Again, I have never used a box blade, but I would imagine that any leverage in that area could be problematic with regards to controlling the angle of the implement.

Again, I could be barking up the wrong tree here, so I'll try whatever works best.

Thanks for the input.

You mean side to side play in the top link or the top link pin?

A sliding top link pin is a non-issue. However, the spacing between tabs where the top link fits should be about 2" give or take. I have seen that spacing bigger and all it does is allow for a beefier ball socket end on the top link.

If you are worried about the top link sliding around between the tabs then get a couple of Cat I to Cat II top link pin conversion bushings and cut then to fit. Agri-Supply sells the bushings for $0.69 each.

My solution to your problem is to just get a longer top link pin and get that BB out and do some work.

BTW, if you go to the King Kutter web site and download the generic parts manual from the pdf library, look at page 14 and page 15. It shows very nicely how the KK box blade and heavy duty box blade should look when assembled correctly.

I ran into the same issue with my KK Box Blade. I cut the spacer so the gap was a little wider than my top link. After I tightened the spacer bolt down, I had to bend the brackets to open up the gap at the top of the attachment point. Been moving a lot of dirt and haven't had a problem.

Maybe you've tried this already, but hold both ends of the top link and turn it until it extends out almost as far as possible. If it appears that it's still too short, stop by a local tractor dealer and buy you a new top link, usually less than $30. They come in all sizes. Make sure you know how much longer you'll need when you go to the dealer.

As for the other problem, you've been given good advice.

I bought a KK Box blade 2 weeks ago and had some problems putting the top link together. Be sure you have the arms on the right side of the connectors at the blade level. Otherwise, you don't get the correct spacing.

We had to take mine apart and put it back together to get the correct spacing.

This maybe isn't your problem, but I made that mistake and thought I'd pass on what I learned.

MadReferee: "You mean side to side play in the top link or the top link pin?" Thanks for the input. My concern is (was) the free side to side movement of the top link end connected to the BB if (when) I use a longer pin. I picked up a longer top link pin on the way home last night and will give that a try this weekend (weather permitting). Also, I downloaded the generic parts manual and their illustration doesn't help the situation. The drawing shows the arms on the wrong side. If you try to do it the way they show you it will never go together. Still handy to have the parts list just in case though.

TomK: "I cut the spacer so the gap was a little wider than my top link." I was thinking about doing just that. I am not sure I want to start cutting up pieces of my new implement before I use it. I'll try the longer top link pin first and if that doesn't seem to satisfy me, I'll do the old cut and grind. Thanks for the information.

KiotiJohn: "hold both ends of the top link and turn it until it extends out ". Thanks John, but I guess I have done a good job of confusing everyone. It is just the pin that is too short, not the top link itself, at least as far as I can tell. I have to remover the BH to install the BB and I want to finish the bit of "hoein'" I have remaining first. Thanks for the help.

Wesdor: "We had to take mine apart and put it back together to get the correct spacing." Given the number of possible permutations one could go through assembling the BB, I understand your pain. Once I got a longer top link pin I ended up loosening everything back up and retorqueing it so the pin would slide in and out.

As usual I am glad I asked the experts. This board saves me from making mistakes. I hope I can return the favor some day. Thanks again to you all.

I have the back arms on the outside on my KK boxblade (solves the problem of needing a long top link pin and having the extra side play).
I just got the bolts started and used an airgun, the back arms will bend right into place, no problem..
