I quess I did dump some money into my tiller the 4th year I had it.
It cost me a whole $5 in paint to get it to match my tractor.

i think that would be it., but don't spend too much time and $$$ on it. it won;t rust out. at least not for a long time.

Brett, I've yet to see a post about the KK tiller that involved the tiller needing parts. Surely they do from time to time, especially if used commercially, but I haven't seen it. Well, maybe somebody had to replace tines, which would seem to wear out on any tiller after years of banging rocks.

I've got 2 "tillers". One is a top-of-the-line Howard Rotovator. 80", about $6500 when new, and VERY highly regarded as about the best "tiller" made.

I've also got a 72" King Kutter tiller that I bought almost 3 years ago, at auction, with the intent of re-selling for a profit. I do, among other things, new lawn installs (at new home sites) Shortly after I bought the KK tiller, I had the call to till a yard that was chock full of rock, brick bats, and general new construction "trash". I thought it would be a good chance to see how the KK tiller performed, and IF I was going to destroy one, at least it wouldn't be my Howard tiller.

Long story short.... I still have the KK tiller. It does an excellent job, it has NEVER caused any trouble, and when I did break 2 tines (wrapped up a 20' legnth of 1/2" re-bar found buried at a new home site), they were redily available at a TSC store near the house. NO DELAY, no waiting for parts, no $4000 to $5000 purchase price.

As the owner of what is considered the BEST TILLER MADE, (Howard) and what may well be the least respected tiller made, (KK) I feel like I have a great perspective on what tiller to buy, should I be choosing a new one today. Since the KK would likely last about as long as any, and it is priced at less than half of the BEST, NO BRAINER...........

I learned at an early age that an "eletist attitude" with regards to purchasing equipment for my own use, only leads to WASTING HARD EARNED MONEY.

I don't need "designer labels" unless those labels are on something obviously better. I've seen nothing to indicate that anyone makes a tiller that's "obviously better" than a KK tiller.

Just because they don't have a shiney automotive finish paint job, there is NO REASON WHAT-SO-EVER to term them as second rate.

My "opinion" is based on USING a KK tiller, not just looking at one, or talking with someone. It gets used hard, and performs flawlessly.

So how important is it to cover at least one wheel track?
Like I mentioned in one of these tiller posts... if I go with the recommended KK tiller for my tractor I'll be about 7" shy and KKs aren't adjustable to offset. I may be able to adjust the lower links to get some offset, but I'm not sure if it would be enough or if the tiller at a slight angle would affect the way it worked.

I use the 72" KK on a John Deere 2440 that has a rear wheel width of 82". SO... I'm tracking 5" wider on each side than the width of the tiller. As the dirt flies out the back, even with the rear gate DOWN, it covers those tracks. Its never been a problem (for me, in my application) I can't speak for eveyone, but I haven't had an issue with it....

Hold on now,
I was actually just trying to stir things up a bit and you guys sure came after me. Well done. I have little Yanmar tiller that works pretty well so far. I just tilled about 2 acres last summer and my garden annualy. So it may never wear out. But if it did, I'd probably get a KK. I like saving money also. And now that I've gotten hammered by lots of testimonials, I'd feel even better about it. So, everyone relax. Just a little prodding, not a spear. bw
