You probably drained out what I plan on putting in my used tiller that has a leaky gearbox - 000 grease. It lubricates just as well as gear oil but will not leak out (as fast).

I had the same stuff in mine, I left it in there and topped it off with gear oil. I figured it was just some grease used to keep things from rusting while sitting on the sales lot.

Could the yellow gunk coming out be pieces of paint?

I don't think it was paint, unless it disolved somehow because it was not solid. ...little yellow globs of something.

Yup, the manual calls for GL-5 85w-140 gear oil or "Triple Zero grease which can be poured"
