After a very late start I might add. I always bust on my farmer friends...too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry...Goldilocks and porridge too hot, too cold, etc. This year is a new one...the crops are growing too fast!!! Happy 4th.

My wife and I were just talking about that saying. I think it was from the days before hybrids,and the amount of fertilizer used today. Not sure I have ever seen corn not knee high by the 4th and I'm 61 yrs old.
It also depends on your location... I wouldn't even consider planting corn before Memorial Day.
Another saying was; " plant your peas by Mother's Day if you want them ready for July 4th"... I've had them in the ground many times, yet have never picked peas before middle of the month...
My family ran a greenhouse for 100+ years on the old farmstead... hence we were always the last to plant. My grandfather put his garden in on July 4th weekend without a problem; and he passed away (1979) long before Al Gore invented global warming and the internet.

Mt 80 year old neighbor still farms full time. He says that every day without planting after May 15th he loses a growing day with corn. His corn looks extremely nice this year.
