I should have clarified my last better. Do you think the mud flaps would work better than the chains?

stock guards are chains or even solid plates on some models, and on other models, rubber matting is stock.

I think ANY of them are better than nothing.

stiff belting should not be a problem.

I've seen them made from horse stall matting.. mud flaps.. etc.

the weight of a front and rear set of chains is going to add a few hundred pounds at MOST to a cutter. IMHO.. no big deal unless you are already at your 3pt limit. if so.. a lighter / lighter duty mower may be in order.

my JD1517 batwing has some metal fixed guards, and some belting guards.. all dealer installed.

I've made flap guards for most of the rest of mine.

I have one mower with some chain guards.

all are better than nothing.

chain might deflect a bit more energy, if you make them correctly.. etc.

Soundguy, I had considered doing that with mining conveyer belts, but the belts are too stiff. In your opinion do you think that would work better than the chains? The chains may add unnecessary weight to the cutter depending on how big the chain links are now that I think about it.

I was thinking the same thing. I picked up a mud flap on the road for use in some project. Its still in the work truck. All thats wrong is the bolt holes tore out so it fell off.

Was thinking after reading on another post to use it but thought it would be to stiff and hold all the cut grass under to long and bog the cutter up.

HI all, I was hoping that by reviving this old thread, some of you might be able to provide a long term follow up on the king kutter cutter?

I ran across the Kodiak brand this evening and would like the MD 6 I think with the slip clutch. I know the slip clutches are more upkeep but I like the one on our very HD 6' unit that is more for keeping power line, etc right of ways clear. Not sure the front end of the 3000 or 3600 Fords would even stay on the ground it is so heavy. The Kodiak MD 72 is a bit over 700 pounds I think.

Check the slip clutch when you get it. I assumed that the clutch on the one I got last year had been adjusted at the factory so I did not look at it until this spring when I did the annual loosen and slip routine. Turned out that it was adjusted tighter than the factory spec. I did have one incident last year where the edge of the mower pulled a rock up out of the ground and it banged around in the mower some. Dented the skirt from the inside in one place. I don't think that a clutch slipping or not would have changed much but I'm not sure.

am looking at buying the Kodiak SD5 which is suppose to be equivalent to the Titan 1205 - both 5' cutters. Any difference?? They are the same price.
