Kohler Engine

I have a new walker mower with a 23HP Kohler ( wish it was a Kawi or Honda) and when I shut it down at low idle it will diesel for a few seconds before finally shutting down. What could cause this? Maybe low octane gas? Out of time? The mower is new apron 30 hrs and seams to do it more when it has been run for a while and is real hot.

I am not familiar with that engine, but my Toro ZTR has a 15hp Kohler Courage engine and the manual says to shut it off at full throttle. The dealer said it needs to be at least 3/4 throttle.

I have been shutting it down with the throttle as low as it can go.

The manual for my Husky mower with Kohler engine says shut it down at 1/2 throttle or it will backfire (and it will!).

That was the way I was accustomed to doing any engine, but these newer ones with the fuel shut-off solenoid have to be done differently, or like chipsndust said, it'll backfire. I used to have a Toro ZTR with a Briggs engine that was the same way. You shut them down at full throttle. But as I said, I'm not familiar with yours, so I can't say for sure that's the problem.

I have a Kohler CV20S (20hp) engine on my mower and the manual says to let it idle for a little while before shutting it off.

I've got a 7 horse Kohler on my 40 year old Troy Bilt tiller that still runs great. You've got to stop it at about half speed or it will backfire. I've chalked it up to 40 years of carbon build up in the valves.

What everyone else said. Shut it down on full throttle. I used to work in a small engine shop and we would get that coming in every once in a while.

Thanks for the replies, I will try giving it more throttle at shut down. Kind of sounds counter productive but I will give it a shot. Maybe some super unleaded as well.

My neighbor has a JD 485. He never touches the throttle for any reason. If it sits for a week, he turns it over and its full throttle. If he's backing up a trailer in tight quarters, it's full throttle. Done mowing, full throttle and a shut down from there. I don't know if that has a Kohler or not, but maybe that's why.

Here is what is in my Dixie Chopper mower manual about shut down:

1. Move steering speed control levers to neutral
position to stop mower movement.
2. Push deck engaging switch (PTO) down to
disengage mower deck blades.
3. Pull parking brake lever all the way up to set
parking brake.
4. Move throttle to the idle position.
5. Allow engine to idle for two minutes before
turning key off.

The following is from the Kohler Courage engine Owner's Manual that you can download from the Internet. So whether you let it idle, as I grew up doing with all gasoline engines, or whether you shut it off at high speed depends on whether or not yours has the shutdown solenoid.

Stopping
1. Remove the load by disengaging all PTO
attachments.
2. a. For engines without a shutdown solenoid:
Move the throttle to the slow or low idle
position. Allow the engine to run at idle for
30-60 seconds; then stop the engine.
b. For engines equipped with a shutdown
solenoid: Position the throttle control
between half and full throttle; then stop the
engine.

Incidentally, maybe one time in ten, when I shut mine down, after the engine quits turning, I get one loud backfire pop. The dealer says that solenoid is sometimes sticking, but he doesn't think it will hurt the machine.

My OM says idle at low speed for several minutes and then shut down. While its idling, thats when I clean the mower off.
