is there room to offset the engine back to make up an adapter sleeve?

Soundguy - yes I believe I can do that. I don't really want the expense of buying a new shaft then tearing the engine down to replace it - seems I could just take this one back and buy a brand new one with a tapered shaft. I need a horz. shaft with a taper to replace a tecumsha HM80 with a tapered shaft (around 7 or 8hp will do).
Does anyone know of a site that list engine shafts and sizes?

I am not a fan of you putting a straight to tapered adapter on the engine shaft if you are going to be increasing its lenght in way. The orginal tapered shaft pulled the 1 shaft up so that they were if perfect aligement.
You could find a short length of tapered shaft and mount this on a set of pillow bearing. This could be either belt driven or a love joy / rubber coulping metal jaw rated for the 7 HP at 3600 Rpm.

Have a shaft about a foot or so long machined with the taper on one end and stick it in the blower. Support the other end of the shaft sticking out of the blower housing with two pillow block beraings. Add a pully to the new shaft and a pully to the existing engine and make it a belt drive.

um.. that's exactly what I was talking about.. IE.. moving the engine back to use a coupler shaft.. etc.

Thanks for all the information! I was able to search long and hard and find a Briggs 9HP with the tapered shaft brand new. It ended up costing me about $75 more but I figure it saves me a ton of work, and I don't need to have an adapter made, or tear the entire motor down to make it match up correctly. Thanks for the help!
