Kritter killin

I've gotten my share of snakes, rabbits, mice, voles, an occasional mole, frogs. toads and one squirrel that I'm aware of but the absolute strangest one of all was a bird and I think it was a sparrow. I was chipping limbs with a rental unit once and there were a bunch of flies hanging around the feeder mouth, well here comes the bird at full speed, dives into the swarm and straight into the chipper! Needles to say it was a closed coffin affair. :D

Hit a fawn lying down in a wheat field (I think it was injured already) with a swather. That was a bloody mess and a nightmare to fix the broken parts of the swather. Also quite traumatic as I was 15 or so at the time. My grandmother was traumatized as well when I came into the house with blood and parts all over me, as she thought I was injured.

I came within a couple of feet of bush hogging a newborn fawn a few years ago. Hiding in the tall grass.
By rights I should have hit him but something caught the corner of my eye and I got the tractor shut down just in time.
Now I don't bush hog in June any more. Wait till July at least when they've got their legs under them and can scram if the tractor comes near.

All I ever find are yellow jacket nests - lots of them

I bush hog with a 1010 John Deere. After several close calls with fawns and young deer and rabbits, I fabricated a T-Bar that extends out in front of the tractor. I welded scrap pieces of chain onto the bar so they touch the ground, about 8 inches apart. No more problems.

That's a great idea!:thumbsup::cool:

Swallows are my favorite bird. My dad used to nail up places for them to build nests, but they mostly have fallen down now. I should restart the tradition and kill more skeeters.

You should especially since there are far fewer open barns for them to nest in. We still keep ours open and we have a ton of them this year. A bit messy but the little rascals are a hoot to watch, listen to and eat a LOT of black flies and Mosquitos. Try watching them late in the day backlit by a low sun!! You can see the bugs and their acrobatics well.

Field nesting birds are another reason I wait till after July 4 to mow.

I've killed a bunch of snakes myself with my mower, but my most vivid memory of "field kill" was when I was a kid, standing watching my Grandpa mow the chicken yard with an IH Cub and sickle-bar mower. Up jumped a rabbit at the worst possible time (for him). My G'pa stopped the tractor and said "Jerry, take that rabbit into the house and tell Grandma to fix it for lunch." We had fried rabbit that day, instead of chicken, and it was gooooood!

I hit a fawn this year-felt terrible. I had been cutting the field for an hour-the fawn never moved, nor did I see a doe in all that time. Funny, I hunt deer and usually kill 2-4 a year, but hitting that fawn really bothered me!
