I'm a newbie, but why would one drive in 4 x 4 when just cruising down the road? Or does it really make any differance?

Well ..... you wouldn't (if you remember to shift it out of 4wd when you get to the road). The whine makes a good reminder.

Four wheel drive on pavement leads to rapid tire wear through scrubbing.

On sand/dirt movement of sand/dirt acts as differential, so no scrubbing.

ALSO:

You need to engage 4-WD going downhill so you have four wheel braking.

If you do not have 4-WD engaged going downhill only rear wheels brake which, in freak circumstances, can lead to disaster.

Thanks. It wasn't clear to me whether the OP was driving in 4 x 4, high gear on level ground. So running with the front drive in high gear could be the problem whine. But doing so is not a good idea for several reasons, including the whine. We'll see if the OP has diagnosed the problem, be it the relief valve (whatever/whererever that is) or otherwise.

I don,t drive in four wheel drive,, the tractor is a 4x4. sorry for the slip.
