I've got a 25 hp Deere and it would have sucked wind running that mower also. My mid mount mower is a 60" but it would probably pull a 72" finish mower on a normal lawn O.K. I'm pretty sure a 6' brush mower would be too much and I think a 5 footer would be better for it. I've used a mid mount as a brush hog before and they just don't work very well for it but like you said, not going to be a every day thing so why not use what you have.

My experience with too-tall grass is limited to about 10 years ago when I had a 5' rotary for a 21HP B7500. It worked OK if I went slowly.

I've mentioned it before, but the weight of the deck plays a large role, especially if the land isn't flat. The 60" Caroni RFM works fine on the old 16HP Ford 1210. But the 60" RFM LandPride from the B7500 was way too much for the Ford. Both 60" decks, but the difference in weight made the LandPride unusable on the Ford.

You are abusing your tractor. Think of this... would you mow 3 foot tall grass with a push mower?! Finish mowers are for mowing lawns... maybe cutting off 4 or 5 inches max. You are trying to mow hay with a lawn mower!

Your tractor to mow tall grass needs a bush hog (rotary mower) that’s no wider than 5 feet.

Use the right tools for the job and you’ll love the results.

Thanks this was a one off job, that frankly worked and by all accounts was free because of borrowed equipment. Just wanted to make sure I didnt buy a dud of a machine.
Like has been said.
Its not the machine, its what your trying to do with it.
Finish mowers are for lawns.
A 72" finish mower is borderline big for that machine on a regularly mowed lawn let alone a 3' field.

This is 2nd mowing of my field that was over 3' tall, using finish mower. Normally i keep it mowed down, but between all the rain, then getting pneumonia, it never got mowed till now. I'll mow it in another week and it will be down to lawn height. 0629191609a.jpeg

Doesn't mean its the right tool for the job.
Any finish mower I have ever owned struggles badly and you need to cut at a snails pace mowing 3' tall grass.
My brush mower or sickle bar mower cuts the same grass with ease.

That's why i cut it high first time, than lower. Finish mower chops it fine, rotary mower will drop it like hay, BTDT before.

I wouldnt do it all the time, but i have done it several times over the last 20 yrs, and prefer mowing with finish mower instead of the rotary. I even use the finish mower to cut the weeds and grass in my woods now, instead of the rotary.
