So the job is finished.

The rear axle leak was, indeed, the oil seal. A pretty straightforward job, actually. Took off the axle case, replaced the seal, and did the bearings while I was at it, put it back together.

That plug was another matter. As simple of a job as that seemed like it would be, what a pain. So hard to get in there and work. Popping the old plug out was no biggie at all. Just used a screw driver. But getting the new one in...wow. I went ahead and put some silicone sealer on it for good measure, which actually made the job harder, because I kept getting it everywhere. I ended up sticking it up in there with a long pair of needle nose pliers and just pushing at it until it stayed there and I could let go with the pliers. That took about half a dozen tries. Then once it stuck in the hole, I just used two screw drivers to get it seated. I kind of used them as a lever and a fulcrum and worked it until it seated.

I've mowed and used the bucket since the repairs, and not a drop has leaked yet. Fingers crossed.
