I have a question regarding the listed weight of these tractors. The Kubota B2910 weighs around 1800lbs, the NH TC29D around 2500lbs and JD 4210 around 2700lbs.

They are all ~30HP machines, why is there such a weight difference between the Kubota and the NH or JD? The NH and JD tractors don't seem that much larger. Is the B2910 a different class of tractor? Should I be comparing the NH and JD to the Kubota L3130 instead?

I'm concerned that a tractor that weighs as much as the JD 4210 or the NH TC29D might sink in my lawn while mowing. Should this be a concern?

I appreciate any help. Thank you.

Well, I don't know about the other two, but I can tell you about the TC29D. Also I will do my very best not to go on a rant about how awesome the tractor is... but it's hard not to. It is the best investment I have made EVER! Ok, as far as mowing your lawn. I chose to NOT have my tires loaded for that particular reason. And, I chose the R4 tires (Industrial) so that they arent so radically agressive that they eat up my lawn. When I finally took delivery of my tractor, it came with a rotary cutter. I currently own a house just outside of town with a 1 acre lawn, and I also own a 50 acre plot of land out in the country that I just purchased that I will be building on next year. Well, I was so excited when my tractor arrived that I just had to try mowing with it. My lawn in town needed mowing bad, and although I knew I couldnt mow with the rotary cutter, I wanted to make a few passes with it anyways. Well, it had rained the day before so the ground was a little soft but not bad. I made about 10 passes with the rotary cutter, and NO ruts at all. I plan on mowing my lawn on my 50 acres next year with a finish mower so weight was important to me, and the TC29 was perfect.. Heavy enough to be stable with the FEL and to provide plenty of traction when needed, but light enough not to gouge a wet lawn. Sorry for such a long post but I thought you would want to know firsthand of an actual experience with it. One more thing, and I think everyone on TBN will agree.. if you do get a compact utility tractor, at all cost.... get a Loader and get HST!!! Those two options payed for themselves in the first WEEK!!!
Good luck..
Brad

A long time ago, there were a number of discussions about the tractor weights; something to the effect that some manufacturers may use "curb" weight?; i.e., ready to roll while Kubota may use shipping weight; i.e., in the crate without tires, wheels, etc. I don't know whether anyone ever got around to actually weighing the tractors to see if that were the case or not. So there may or may not be as much difference as the published weight numbers indicate.

Thanks Bird.

Can anyone else confirm this? Does Kubota weigh their machines differently from JD or NH? For instance, do they weigh their machines without the wheels/tires?

I asked my Kubota dealer about the listed weight being w/o tires. He didn't know, but he looked it up and said that what I had heard was right. Kubota lists the shipping weight, that is w/o tires or wheels. I guess that's because the optional tires vary so much in weight, but then why do the other manufacturers list their tractor weights w/ R1s? Just another tractor marketing mystery I suppose.

skiprox,

Thanks for the info. So what do (4) tractor wheels/tires weigh for a B2910 or B7800?

Somewhere I have that information. I just can't remember where it is. Still getting settled in the new house and I can't find anything. I'll look around tonight and see if I can find the numbers. Having just had a rear flat repaired on my B2710, I was suprised at how little they actually weighed.

Neophyte,

Below should be a link to an old thread about tractor weights. It is hard to compare trues weights of tractors in a catalog, since Kubota uses shipping weight (dry) without wheels, NH uses shipping weight (dry) with R1s & JD uses field weight (all fluids) with R1s. For my NH, the R1s (tires/wheels) weigh 366lbs, the turfs weigh 304lbs, & the R4s weigh a whopping 460lbs without being filled. The B2910 tire/wheel combo weighs 270lbs for R1s, 350lbs for turfs, and the R4s only weigh 250lb. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Fluids should add at least 100lbs (maybe a lot more) to both the Kubota & NH. I believe the NH and the JD fit in between the Kubota B and L (3000lbs+) series in both size and weight. The L was too big (length) for my barn, and the B just didn't seem heavy enough for me. The B flexed a good amount when I stepped onto it, but 325lbs is a lot for a tractor that size. The Kubota L, NH, JD models didn't flinch much, if at all, at my weight.

I found an easy test to see how much a tractor weighs, walk up to one a give a push on the ROPS, then climb abroad - then decide for yourself which feels heavier. If you can't tell a difference, then the difference shouldn't matter.
