My local dealers were all about $2000 higher than the Kubota dealer whom I bought from, about 3hrs away in Vt. He agreed to deliver to me in Mass and took plenty of time orienting me to the tractor and attachments when he got here.
For whatever reason, none of the local dealers felt the need to match the competing price, or even to offer to come close; Result? They lost my business because I just don't see a reason to pay that kind of premium in order to deal locally. The customer makes the choice.
I'm not saying that the dealer's position is unreasonable. I don't know. Maybe the dealer's costs are higher and he can't make a competitive offer and still make a profit. But, for that matter, two dealers ten miles apart may have different cost structures, too and if the one with higher costs can't sell at competitive prices, that's his problem; not the customer's. Maybe some people will pay more to deal with him anyway.
