I have been reading around the forum for a few weeks trying to gather up some information about hydraulics. I think I have a pretty good understanding of them but I still have some questions.

I just recently bought a BX 23 backhoe off a kubota tractor and mounted it to another tractor to complete a few small jobs around the house. I need a to find PTO pump kit and a reservoir that is as small as possible yet enough to run the backhoe with decent power and speed.

Anything you guys can add would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...

What tractor?:)

And, out of curiosity...... is there a reason you can't/won't run it off of your tractor's hydraulic system? It only takes a few gpm to run.

The tractor this is mounted on is Pasquali 993 that I found about a year ago and fixed it up. It has a hydraulic pump on the front that runs the front end loader and the steering cylinders since it is articulated, however, it is not plumbed for lines in the back and there does not appear to be an easy way to get a pressure line. Also, the pump is only about 3.5gpm so I am not sure if this would even be enough anyway. The one other thing is that it is imported from Italy so all the fittings and extra information is sometimes tricky to find.

1*Seems odd a man would sell his BH off a BX23
2* Sounds to me like you might have been better of by buying the whole BX23 tractor back hoe and all.

Yeah its a little bit of an odd situation I admit. However, I was able to get a pretty good deal on the backhoe compared to what other 3pt backhoes cost. I have read the posts about these backhoes and realize their limitations and what I want it for falls well within the expected capability I think. So I basically just ended up with this one since it was a good deal at about 1/3 the price of the smallest 3pt backhoe available.

David,

Something like this PTO pump from the SurplusCenter would be great for your small BH. If you look around their site you'll find all the stuff you need like, tanks, filters, fittings and hoses.

I drew up this diagram quickly with the pump listed above in mind. Before I go too much further though I want to make sure what I have in my mind will work. So does this look feasible?

Also, I suppose this diagram depends on whether the BX23 backhoe uses and open center or closed center valve...does anyone happen to know this?

The BH's valve IS open center for sure, and the valve bank should already have PRV's(pressure relief valves) in it so another one would not be necessary.

I agree with Kennyd on the pump. I use the next size up to run a hydraulic motor. You will need a gauge to set the pressure relief valve on the backhoe control valve. It is quite possible that it is set higher than the pump limit.

At 7gpm 1/2" ID hose should be satisfactory in all parts of the circuit (including the return line) other than the suction line, which should be 1" ID as you show.

Good luck, and send us some pictures.
