I'd buy the property first and set a budget aside for the tractor. The tractor you buy should meet your needs and you need to know what property you have first.

Agree 100%

You will have to size to your largest horse-power task. So,if you are making hay, squares or rounds?PTO driven bailer or a mini-baler ect.If rounds, you have to consider weight and lifting capacity of the FEL.Either tractor can run a snowblower or plow.

Plow, baler, stuff like that dictate the 9960. I have a 2 bottom plow for my L5740 just to work small plots. Same thing with the disk - 13 foot with 18 inch blades makes the L5740 but I pull a 20 foot with 22" blades on the large tractor to get a better job done faster. Other work you mention might be tougher in some cases with the large tractor but it can be done. At our main farm I sometimes run the L5740 over to clean up snow I just can't get to with our JD6230 but I could always use a shovel along with the 6230 and until I got the 5740, we did manage all the farmyard utility work with the 6210 (predecessor to the 6230 we got last year). The 6230 can also bale, rake, tedder, and if the NH TS115A we have on the Discbine breaks it will run that. Assume your budget won't stretch to the next class because the power shift is a feature I wouldn't be without (I have the money).
