Somewhere in my research, I found an easy reference for Kubota engine specifications. I can't find it now, I've looked for 20 minutes. Anyway, I noticed that the engine in the BX2660 had the same bore and stroke as a couple other tractors, one or two which claimed over 30hp.

Now I don't know squat about diesels, but I do know that in gas engines, sometimes a series of engines will be essentially the same in every way except for the carburetor. You can take a carb off an 18hp engine, put it on a 15hp in the same line and get 3 more hp.

Is it the same for Diesels? Could there be 5 more hp lurking behind a simple injector change or adjustment?

I know, for example, the D1005 used in the BX2660 is also used in the B2320. That same engine was used in the past in a 21 hp rated B series tractor.

I suspect, as you speculate, that different fuel delivery and other tweaks can make a few hp difference. I don't personally get too geeked up over a few horses one way or the other.

Also, if Kubota "rates" the engine at 3100 rpm at 26 hp or at 2700 rpm and calls it 23 hp, is there likely much difference except where they decide to "make the call"? Wouldn't marketing also drive some of this?

leonz or someone else with a lot of knowledge can explain it all, but it is not uncommon. The M8540 and M9540 have identical engines, but 10 HP difference.

There are many things to consider when it comes to hp rating for similar engines. There is more to it than just a smoke screw adjustment. Such as valve timing, injection timing, injector sizing, rpm, etc, etc. I have found there to be very little gain in messing with things especially with the small displacement engines. If you could get a hold of what the various engine codes mean then you might be able to tell what was changed to get 2-3 hp from the same engine.:D:thumbsup:

Here is a list of some of the Kubota engines and their specs.

Hello Ian, yes a diesel can have additional horsepower.

It was one of my posts about the "Kubota shake rattle and roll" issue and I uploaded a several engine specs., and performance curve data as well as discussing the so called vibration problem(s) which Kubota cannot explain or fix; is the result of a fuel reduction adjustment to pacify the EPA and its "Voodoo" requirements for engine emissions to deal with the unpurifed diesel exhaust which is easily corrected with no fuel reduction adjustment in the injection pump.

The Kubota engines are indirect injection and have nozzles not injectors,
The engine frames/models are the same, the fuel delivery volume per cycle is what is changed and provides more useable horsepower.

So the nozzles deliver the fuel into a common manifold?

Ian

No; the fuel is pumped directly into the combustion chamber from each individual injection port of the injection pump to the specific injection nozzle for each cylinder.

The overflow return fuel line allows the excess fuel pumped at the same time to be pumped back to tank with a common return fuel rail line back to tank.
