The #@*XY driver (& I'm being kind) who tried to go down the slope with a full FEL.

I do all the time, but do remember, 4WD is a huge bonus and knowing how and reacting too a emergency is something that takes practice. The tractor you see there is 4WD, the driver had slipped it out of 4WD while on a concrete driveway and forgot about getting it back into 4WD. The box scraper on back weighs 1200 lbs. He avoids slopes now, especially while the bucket is loaded. I also have the luxury of HST with my tractor which allows me to come to almost a complete stop without using brakes and do so very smoothly. It also allows me to instantly backup if needed. It's also possible to do with a manual transmission as I do it with this very tractor, frequently, you just need to really be aware of what to do. Rat...

"The tractor you see there is 4WD, the driver had slipped it out of 4WD while on a concrete driveway and forgot about getting it back into 4WD."

The post indicates the rolled tractor was a gear machine. Any idea what gear he was in when he headed down the slope?
There's a few I go down that require 1st gear low. Although sometimes I feel like getting off and pushing (speed is about 7/10ths MPH), this is the best gear for the descent. Never had the tractor speed up on me, although it was still intimidating. WAG, the slope I'm talking about is about 30°. In my case, the FEL was on, but I wasn't carrying anything...had a back blade for ballast.

I read about a guy killed (in NE PA) when he went down a slope...couldn't stop and the machine went over a precipice at the end of the slope. He was crushed by the tractor. I don't recall all the particulars. The tractor was a Deere 770. Although the reason for the loss of control wasn't known (he was dead...he can't tell us), I surmised he started down in too high a gear and tried to stop to shift down. Once you clutch, you lose engine braking and start freewheeling.
The 770 is a great machine, but the brakes aren't that great and...although you can clutch and shift out, you can't really shift into a gear while you're moving. You gotta start down in the lower gear.

That guy must have been a heart doctor or something of that nature not an operator.

The dealer has alot to do with what is covered and what isn't by Kubota. But a rolled tractor is a tough one to get in unless a major malfunction could be proven.

I don't know about a heart doctor or that sort. I heard he was a mechanic. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

He's my brother in law. He was in low gear and had the rear wheels locked up with the brakes. It was a matter of the center of gravity moving to the front and unweighting the rear wheels enough so that not enough traction could be had by the rear wheels. As the tires slid along the dirt, the speed picked up. Had it been in 4WD, the front wheels would have done most of the braking either through the brakes, the engine or both.

My first reaction is to immediately drop the bucket which will only be 6 or 8 inches of the ground. This will quickly add much traction to the rear wheels as well as act as somewhat of an anchor. I actually practice doing this every now and then because of the slopes I encounter. It's great to do because the panic you get the first time it happens to you is great ly reduced. Be Safe, Rat...

P.S. I was kidding about the warranty, kind of a twist on the fallingrock theme.

On a 2wd or 4wd operated in 2wd, it won't matter what gear it's in when the rear wheels lift off the ground. There is nothing left to stop it. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Good one cowboy, but Rat still hasn't let on to what that tractor driver does for a living! Yup that would be the only other one to do that other than a heart doctor. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Guess I'd echo the sentiment that encourages our new friend not to stay silent even if embarrassed. No secrets here and no condemnation, even if there is disagreement. Pretty obvious that we're all checking radiator connections right now....and I might add to look over the pins and clips that are all over the machines. I've been pulling one spring clip lately - out of one of my bucket pins - and I haven't been in the grabby stuff. I'm thinking about putting the bolt-secured pins back in. I think I had a sprung spring clip ("bobby pin") that lost it's holding power. Don't need the bucket to come partially off or jamb a cylinder under load.
