Thanks again for all of the responses! After changing the fuel filters and pump (wish I had known about the $50 pump!...what is your source for aftermarket parts?) I siphoned the tank, ran it out of diesel and blew compressed air thru the fuel line into the tank (the BX 1850 doesn't have a tank strainer) while my wife trashed an old shop vac and just kept moving the hose thru the tank and I kept blowing air. All said and done, there was an accordion piece of plastic (molding leftover?) and some organic crap in the vacuum. I'm guessing the plastic was stuck in the fuel line hole because everything is running fine now.

I got it from O'Reilly's Automotive. The desk person helped me find one that had a slightly higher working pressure and fuel flow than the OEM pump. Sorry, don't remember the manufacturer, but there hasn't been a starting problem since installing new pump. I will also be doing the fuel filter conversion as posted elsewhere on this site for the BX 25D. (don't remember original poster) I hope you enjoy your Little Orange as well as I do mine.

I'd check for water in your filter, and or sludge . also any cracked rubber fuel lines.

Practically any low pressure electric diesel pump will work. Look on eBay or Amazon for "5-7 psi fuel pump". You'll have to wire it in yourself though, slim chance the connector will be the same if present. Those will cost anywhere from $12 to $25, whereas the OEM replacement could be as high as $180.
