I just never like using my foot to adjust the steering wheel on my 3240, doesn't seem natural to me. You have to lift your complete foot up off the floor 9 inches every time I get in or out of the cab. My shoe always hits and scuffs up the inside trim around the pedal, usually I have mud and dirt on my shoe when working.
If you own a Grand L 40 look down in that area Unless you have a tiny pointed shoe you're mucking up the area over time also.
You're always jockeying your foot to one side of the clutch and back.
So if I have to lift my foot up 9 inches so does my knee go up in the air 9 inches and my leg comes off the seat 9 inches, what am I some sort of circus monkey doing tricks in the cab? I may be exaggerating a little but I don't know of a vehicle made that has a foot lever to adjust the steering wheel.
You should be able to adjust your wheel with just your hands without the help of your big old boot wedged between the clutch pedal and cab trim to step on a 1 inch rubber pad 9 inches in the air.
Oh well thats just the way it is I guess, at least for the 150 hrs I put on my tractor, thats what I thought anyway.
The other day for the first time I really looked at it and said how hard could it be? Sure enough there is almost a direct straight line from the dash panel to the foot pedal.
Heck there is even a hole pre drilled in the foot lever.
All I had to do was drill one hole in the dash panel as shown add a 1/4 inch rod, I used brass because I had it on hand, my choice would have been a stainless steel rod.
I could have just drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the plastic dash panel but I didn't want the rod to be loose and rattle, and with use over time enlarge the hole.
I had a bunch of 1/4 headphone jacks, so I used one as mount for the rod to go through and as a brass bushing,
The headphone jack makes a nice machined finished 1/4 inch fit for the rod though the dash. With a drop of oil now and then it should last a lifetime.
I made a brass fitting to mount to the foot pedal but All that was needed is to bend the rod and use a cotter pin at the foot pedal but I wanted to machine it a little for a tight fit.
This is one of the easiest Mods to make. To me it's a nice modification.
I have made this more complicated than it has to be. All you need to do is get a straight 1/4 inch rod, drill one hole in the dash at the center of the HST control, it's a straight line all the way down without obstruction and at the bottom of the rod bend an L shape about an 1 1/2" long, thread it and use two nuts on either side of the factory hole in the foot pedal or use 2 cotter pins on both sides of the factory hole in the foot pedal. Remove the heavy-duty spring at the foot pedal, it's not needed.
To do that will take 1/2 an hour. Or you can just leave foot pedal operation as it is.
So now my left side of my body stays put in the seat, my left foot stays on the floor on the other side of the clutch where it belongs and I just push a button with ease to adjust the steering wheel.
I also found out the heavy spring used at the foot pedal is no longer needed with this mod. The system has another spring and that is all that is needed. So very little finger pressure is used to push the button.
Now I know a lot of you guys might be totally happy with the factory foot pedal release for your tilt wheel, thats OK
This Mod is for me and I love the ease in which I have control over my wheel. I really hated the foot pedal release where it was located.
As shown in the last few pictures my left foot is where it should be and never again will I have to jockey it back and forth around the clutch.
