Kubota L2502: More than just a pretty new face?

/ Kubota L2502: More than just a pretty new face? #41
Everything that I’ve seen, read and heard had me believing the improvements and updates to the L2502 were mostly cosmetic, comfort and convenience based. But, there’s more to it than that.

The L2502 has a new updated D1703 engine and Kubota has moved and changed many items under the new hood. First and foremost, the L2502 has a D1703BM-DI-EF04 engine. The previous L2501 has a D1703-M-DI-E4B. I’ll have to investigate further to see if there’s any internal changes to the new engine but, on the outside, it has a new diesel injection pump, they’ve moved to oil indicator dipstick to the left (or drivers side) of the engine, the air cleaner assembly has been moved down closer to the battery, there is a fuse box mounting in front of the radiator, and the fuel tank is completely new and repositioned on the right (passenger side) of the engine compartment.

It even has a hydraulic oil dipstick, no more sight glass!!!

Based on my original conversations with my dealer, I was really surprised to see so many changes to the L2502 when compared to the L2501. He was too, lol.

Anyway, I’m sure there’s more but, I thought I’d share the information I’ve recently learned.

Hey Mike,

Curious if you have had a chance to get any additional information on the injector pump for the D1703BM-DI-EF04?

I reached out to Messicks about the injection pumps being different and why diagrams from both the 2501 and 2502 were the same considering they were different pumps. Messicks told me that while the have different part numbers, they are the EXACT same pump with no differences between the two models.

I buy lots of parts from Messicks.

The pumps may be similar but, they’re not the same. It’s certainly possible they’re interchangeable but, the different part numbers alone, indicates to me, they’re different pumps.

I need to know why we have two adjustment screws on the L2502 compared to one, on the L2501. That remains a mystery to me and at the moment, I don’t have an L2502 to play with.

The fuel adjustments are the only differences I see. I talked with Bob from Mesicks the other day and he said that the part numbers are just updated but they are the exact same pump, no differences. The fuel adjustment part is separate from the pump and not even on the same diagram as the pump itself. the fuel adjustment is clearly a different design than that of the 2501. I am wanting to pull it off and take a look, just worried about my warranty.

Looking at the parts diagram at messicks, they list two different pumps with over a $300 dollar price difference. It does not show that the L2501 pump was replaced by the newer number. There are now 3 versions of the L2502 engine as well.

3 versions of the 2502 engine? Where are you seeing this?

I have been working with local dealer, If you look up a replacement engine you will see that there is 3 different engine model numbers. Probably just different calibration but at some point the cam, fuel cam and cylinder head changed too. As of 1/25 they will have reduced hp as well, from the 24.8 to 23.3.

I wonder why and how they did this. That was the other thing Messicks told me the other day was that all D1703 engines had the exact same configuration, same exact engine. The fueling is just different between them.

Well messicks is wrong, almost none of the internal parts crossover from the L2501 to the L2502, why? I don't know.
