From what I undersatnd is haying requires that you pull some heavy equipment that "toss" a lighter tractor around. Sort of like pulling a heavy trailer with too light a truck.

Thanks Bob,

That's what I thought you meant but just wanted to make sure

I think you will be just fine with the L3400. I have one with 30 hours on it now and I am mighty pleased with it. Mine has the HST.

I have 15 acres of pasture also. I went with a 5ft Woods BB60 mower but I regret not getting the 6ft model... the tractor could handle it just fine.

So long as you are not planning on pulling a baler you don't NEED to move up to a higher hp model for your needs. I think that the L3400 will do just fine. I don't think that 15 acres is that much to handle with a 6ft mower - heck I'm doing it with a 5ft. I've bush-hogged at least 5 times this year as I have no horses yet - and loved every minute of it!.

Now, that said, I think if I were not looking for an HST, I would move up to a L4400. I think it is a no brainer. It's not that much more money and you get a LOT more tractor - extra hp, better hydraulics and lift, more weight.

That's what I would do if I were you. I think that the L3400 will do everything you have listed - it will be just right. The L4400 will do it faster and is a heck of a deal if you have already decided you don't need the HST.

Good luck.

My L2800 has difficulties curling/lifting when I have a bucket full of wet dirt/clay which I'm sure is either right at max lift capabilites or beyond.

I run a 6' cutter (Woods MD172) just fine with my L3400.

I think you'll do fine with the L3400, bk. Considering your budget and the price you're getting, I'd jump on it. Get the rears filled to give the rig some heft and counter balance the FEL and you should be good to go. You might want to consider getting a rear remote...it'll blow your budget, but buying it with the tractor is the cheapest way to get it.

I'd stay on top of the mowing with that rig and not let a jungle appear. If it's mostly grasses and the ground is not too rough, the hours mowing should be somewhat enjoyable. An hour or two every evening after supper will make it more bearable and beats flopping down in front of the TV.

It's true that a baler requires something bigger than an L3400, long term anyway. But for raking, the L3400 should be a fine choice. There's a lotta value in that machine.

Why does you loader not have the ability to lift and curl at the same time. Most tractors I have test driven have this ability. Is it the valving in the joystick that is preventing this?

Yep, the control valve prevents it. Not sure why. Probably a pump capacity issue I would guess.
