Just remove the fill plug and either dip your finger into the oil or something else that's clean if it's too low, and give it a smell. Gear oil has a very unique smell to it. Having one type of oil is always nicer than keeping two different types. Up north I would lean towards the super UDT2 for being better in the real cold conditions we see. It's not just the gears and bearings but also the seal material that benefits.

"tearing up" can have several connotations. But it is rather a chicken and egg sort of question after the terrible sounds stop.
