Kubota L3901 vs Mahindra 2638

I am sure you guys will get a kick out of this as well...

When showing the Kubotas online to my wife, her response was...does it come in a different color?

It is just like the model T, you could get a model T in any color you want as long as it was black.

You can get Kubota tractor in any color you want as long as it is orange.

You'll need to buy something bigger for that option. They are neat, but way above what I could ever use:

We were just looking for the same size tractor. We looked at JD, Massey, New Holland, Kioti, Kubota and Mahindra. The JD, Massey and New Holland were all priced about the same and while the fit and finish and comfort features were better I found the tractors had the same capabilities and didn't warrant the extra cost compared to the others.

Kioti, Kubota and Mahindra were also all similar in price to each other. When we were looking the Kubota dealer didn't have a 3901 in stock and we were just going off specs and were leaning towards the kubota. I wanted to drive one before I pulled the plug so when they got one in I went and drove it. As soon as I got on it I ruled the Kubota out. First I didn't like the forward reverse rocker pedal for the HST vs the side by side pedals but then they also put the brake pedals on the same side as the HST pedal which means there is no way to use the individual brakes while back dragging with the loader. Every other Manufacturer moves the brake pedals to the left side on a HST tractor but it looks like Kubota just removed the clutch pedal from the left side and added the HST pedal to the right side and left the brake pedals where the were on the standard transmission model.

That left us between the Kioti DK4210SE and the Mahindra 2638. Both of these were very close and it was hard to decide but ultimately it came down to a couple small things. The Mahindra had a 7yr warranty and the Kioti had a 6yr warranty but other than that everything else was in the Kioti's favor. I don't know anyone that has a Mahindra but know quite a few people with Kioti's and none of them had anything bad to say about them. The fact that the Mahindra doesn't have a DPF kind of scared me a bit. I know how the DPF system works and is basically a filter that traps particulate matter to meet the tier 4 emissions. Mahindra still has to trap this particulate matter but in my research no one could explain how they are doing this and that scared me a bit.

We went with the Kioti and so far a very happy with it but have only had it about a month. I realize you said you didn't want a Kioti and if you can live with the pedal set up on the Kubota I would go with the kubota over the Mahindra.

Just out of curiosity why do you use the brake when back dragging? I've had my Kubota for 20 hrs now and frankly have almost never used the brakes for anything. The HST rocker pedal does everything I need.

Its not that I don't want a Kioti. I never even considered them because the nearest dealer is almost 2 hours away...

Hello TBN-ers,

I currently have a 1985 John Deere 1050 37hp 4x4 with FEL. Tractor has served me well for the last 10+ years but as it gets older I started looking for an upgrade.

Tractor will be mostly used for mowing (60" brush hog and 72"finish mower), food plot tilling (60" tiller), grading gravel driveway, hauling firewood, collected maple sap in the spring, and just general FEL use.

Decided I want to stay in the 37-40hp range as I like this size tractor for what I do with it. Prefer to stay around the $25k mark. So far I have tested John Deere 3038e, New Holland Workmaster 40, Kubota L3901, and Mahindra 2638 and 1538. All with HST and FEL, no cab.

I was not impressed with the John Deere. Does not have SSQA loader, no quick removal of loader (bolts), and aluminum rear end (lighter), and lots of plastic.

Local dealer sells both New Holland and Kubota, so I drove those back to back. No real reason, but preferred Kubota. Just "felt" better.

Mahindra 2638 seems like a "beefy" tractor. Everything seems to be built heavier, sit higher, more of a classic tractor feel compared to how small most of the CUT's have gotten. However, engine seemed kind of noisy (maybe from larger displacement?) and HST was also noisy

I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the Kubota L3901 or the Mahindra 2638. Mahindra is about $2500 cheaper than Kubota. Local Mahindra dealer has been selling them since 2011. The dealer itself has been around longer than I have. Kubota dealer just started selling Kubota but has been selling NH and Case for many many years.

I find myself leaning toward the Kubota mostly based on brand reputation. I know there used to be a lot of issues with Mahindra regarding warranty issues, part availability, and dealers disappearing. Is this still the case?

So all in all, which would you pick? Kubota L3901 or Mahindra 2638? And why? The only other consideration would be jumping to the Kubota L4701, but thats another $6k.

And please, I don't need any "you should buy an LS, Deere, Kioti, etc". :D

I'd choose the Kubota L3901, and here's why.... For me, the most important quality that a tractor can have is reliability. The Mahindra might have it; the Kubota does have it. So the Kubota wins for me.

But speaking of good tractors, that JD1050 4x4 w loader is one of the best utility size tractors ever. Highly sought after, good parts availabiilty and designed to be repaired by the owner. Plus it has no computer but does have a simple turbocharger.
Depending on the condition, trading or selling the 1050 you will probably get you half or better of the price of a brand new Kubota L3901 w/loader. I can see why you might want to do that, but keeping the JD1050 and putting 10K in replacing the obvious wear items isn't the worst of all options either. Starting with the 1050 4x4 w/FEL gives you all kinds of good options.

Yes the dealer is a major part of the purchase decision. I am lucky and have a couple of dealers for each brand within an hour except for Mahindra there was only one dealer but only 20min from me.

Usually when I am back dragging my only contact points with the ground are the bucket and the rear tires. The front axle doesn't have much weight on it so it doesn't steer well using the steering wheel.

with these new tractors (above 25 hp) It's not if you're going to have emissions issues, the question is, how often and how long is it going to take the dealer to get the tractor back into your hands ?
If there were no emissions, I would buy a new tractor tomorrow.
Guess I'll continue to buy used, cause there are Waay too many issues with these new tractors for my comfort.

I looked at new and used when shopping for a larger tractor last year. It often seems like the first few years of modifications to equipment to meet new government mandates are a learning curve for the manufacturers. It's doubtful Kubota intentionally designed the B3350 to fail. The DOC method of dealing with Tier IV appealed to me more than the DPF as the lesser of two evils. The Mahindra 2638HST Cab may have followed me home if the cab hadn't been too small for me.

There were several used tractors that really looked good in the pictures. A closeup look and test drive quickly eliminated most of them. There are things that pictures can't communicate, like a drivetrain that acts weird, twitchy FEL controls, etc. I was fortunate to find a very clean L4240HSTC with 977 hours on it. There were some reservations about spending that amount of money on a tractor without a warranty. Since late December it has 60-some hours, mostly on snow removal and mowing and has been a joy to operate.
