Multiple Fords and Kubotas
I haven't been to the forum lately but am looking at new tractor models that I am not very familiar with and would appreciate the advice of owners and shoppers.

I have been looking a several models including the Kubota K5740 and the MF 1560. The Kubota has lots of bells and whistles that I do not really need but I like it. However I am concerned by it's lack of cubic inches. Though turbo charged, it is only 148 CI.

I have heard that modern diesel engines turbo charged or otherwise do not lug well if at all due to the emissions mandated fuel metering.

I want to be able to run a 6 foot bush hog through just about anything at a good clip on steep ground.

Anyone have any thoughts about the 5740?

What is the going rate for one without cab?

Thanks in advance.

I too am looking at 5740. I cannot seem to get a rear tire (outside to outside) measurement with R4s! Ag tires on one I drove. Also not sure of difference in "standard and deluxe" canopys? Kubota's info and marketing is a little weak here! GREAT PRODUCT though! Here's some prices, real ones!, (not the lowest I have seen)
_________________________________________________________________
5740 rops 4wd hst...................................................$24,900
LA854 HD bucket toothbar...........................................$4,712
R4s upgrade with Multiseal and watered.........................$1,200
Standard sunshade? Wk. light 1 rear remote....................$1,320

Dealer wasn't sure if sunshade in "L" brochere picts was a standard or deluxe?
Looking at ATI 4-in-1 Bucket and a Woods (Gill) SR20 72" or SR25 77" Box blade depending on tire width. (Love the scarifier depth...8 3/4"!)
Rhino TW72 seems to be a good fit also. (84 looked a little big for the L5740).
Looked at Landpride and also considering Woods 840 (1280lbs.) or a 7200 (1330lbs.) cutters.
I have shopped HARD and frankly it's Deere or Kubota if a Hydro/HST transmission is necessary.

Deere 4720 LOADED (TNT Diverter etc...) and 400x Loader with a Deere 4-in-1 bucket seems to be price at $36k and change.
Either will get my $ in about 10 days. ANY COMMENTS APPRECIATED. Esp on attachments. Both tractors are REAL nice!
This is my first purchase...still not crazy about deere's cat1 only 3pt.

SDT the MF1560's were very noisy and lacked response to me and ROPS was too low (I am 6'3") wife demands a canopy 1547 Hydro was absolutely out!...JMHO
Best of luck

ps on the motor stuff I too want to see what the resident experts respond with.

ahvatsa: just a comment on your mower suggestion. I have an L5030 which I use with a 84" Bushhog. It pulls it easily. I don't have a lot of real heavy 2" brush, trees etc. so your application might be different, but IMO, the L5740 should pull a 7' mower without much trouble. I'm no expert. . . so take my experience with all the necessary caveats.

Thanks. I will factor this in. The Deere 4720 with imatch will not work with a MX7 (so I was informed) so I priced with a MX6 and a BB3272 Box blade.

Thanks to both for your comments.

As to engine/torque issue: I do not cut brush as my place is clear but I do not have time to mow everything as often as I would like and experience has taught me that heavy grass pulls harder than brush. Heavy brome grass laying down is about the worst that I have found.

I can pull my 6 foot bush hog through this stuff with my 45 HP Ford gasser or my 38 Hp MF diesels but sometimes not as fast as I would like. My objective here is to save time. I cannot use a larger mower due to terrain and obstructions but would like to mow as fast as the mower will cut it.

My Ford gasser is 172 CI, 45 (old) PTO HP and my MF 35s are both 38 (old) PTO HP but I believe one of them has been turned up as it appears to have substantially more torque than the other. Like lawn mower HP, I suspect that advertised HP today is not the same as advertised HP in the 50s and 60s. Thoughts?

I'm old school and learned long ago that "there is no replacement for displacement." This is more true with respect to torque than HP.

I am really concerned about the 5740s 148 CI engine vis a vis the MF 180 CI and my current tractors without emissions mandated fuel control.

Unfortunatley, my schedule will not let me try out the 5740 in real world conditions and I do not want to put $25K up without more information.

Anyone out there worked either one of these tractors really hard? Does the torque drop off like a wilted lilly when you pull them down below some RPM level?

Thanks, again.

Have you considered a utility type tractor? Unless you really want HST transmission, you will get more power for the same or less money. I have a JD 5105 and it runs my LX6 cutter like it's not even there. 2.9L, 3 cylinders, naturally aspirated. I would expect similar performance from a Kubota M5040 (which I also looked at) or a New Holland TN60 (though not necessarily the TC55, since it also has a small turbo engine).

WHEN? lol. I posted 4/14:
"Again, a novice here. I will say this, "tractor heat" is worst than any Truck SUV or Car I've experienced. They won't even run 20mph
All opinions appreciated!"

My "fire" was so intense that after a couple offers I put out, (on blues!) I decided to COOL down and make no decision until May! This Sat. wife and I are testing JD4720 and Kub L5740.
SCD the Woods sure look good hung on the back of the Kubota! I cannot seem to get an answer to if the GILL (woods) SR25 Box Scraper and the Woods 840 Brushbull will both connect on the same Quick hitch? Gonna be interesting to see if wife likes green or orange? She was raised on red...
I am also to see a 5240 this Sat. Look forward to your posts and pics.

Thanks for the replys, guys.

No, I am in no great hurry, and I have considered utility tractors, which are the only type that I have real experience with. My dealer has a L5740 in stock, and though it has bells and whistles that I do not need, I do like it.

I've also looked at the MF-431/533, which is the latest version of the original TO-35 that came out in 1954. It has a Perkins 202 CI three cylinder diesel engine but is not so modern as the Kubotas even though it has been continuoulsy updated for over 50 years. It is, however, inexpensive.

I would like at least one power shifting range to enable shifting between high and low under load to help with the tough areas. The Kubota 5040/6040, etc. do not have this nor does the MF. I do not need hydrostat but, aside from the inefficiency and expense, it sure is handy.

Thanks, again.
