July in Osh means only one thing. That's the wifes home town. When her folks lived west of the show, the war birds used to meet and get in formation out over the fields. Nothing like being buzzed by a couple hundred vintage fighters all hot-roddin in the sky.

Neal, the RV is still in many pieces but making steady progress. I decided to purchase the engine now because the money I sat aside for it in the market was going down and the engine was going up and when the lines crossed I decided it was time. Actually I bought it last August, things like this don't come from Wal-Mart.
You can see examples of the finished product at www.vansaircraft.com . Mine will be an RV7A.
These are the most popular series of homebuilt aircraft in the world with many thousands flying because of their conventional engineering, speed to stall ratio, mildly aerobatic, roomy and with decent range and useful load. Building an airplane is a large undertaking, I take my time and it will be done when it is done, this is my second, well actually third project, one was sold before completion, the other was completed and I have posted aerial pictures on TBN taken from it. Anything worth doing is worth the time it takes to do it right. J

Who says farmer’s solutions are not practical…? /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

That sure looks like an expensive whatever it is thing. I reckon this engine I have would power a cement mixer or would be useful for a large finish mower. Thanks for reminding me, I have farmers living nearby, I am going to go hide my engine now before they see it. J

TC

Went and visited my friend building the RV8 yesterday.

Building an aircraft (and he has done it with the least costly = most bits kit) is a HUG task, something that even pilots, let alone non-pilots wouldn't understand.

I have learnt a lot from speaking to him and watching. He knows eveery nt and bolt and wire and won't have to look for any switch or control when flying.

Makes for a better pilto i'd say.

He has been going for 6 years now and hopes to finish this year.

Can't wait for a ride.

I sent him your engine pic and description.

His also is an IO-360 but apparently a clone. Made from Lycoming bits but without the factory backing or something. He has "angle valve heads"

Doesn't mean much to me I am afraid.

Cheers

Neal, the angle valve IO360 is quite a bit different form the parallel valve engine. The reason it has angled valves is because it is a hemi-head engine of sorts. The parallel egine is not. The angle valve engine is also about 40 plus lbs heavier. My engine--stock is 180 horses--but due to old fashion hot rodding it dynos at 205 horses at 2700 RPM.
Your friends RV8 kit was pre--Prepunch era. The new CNC computer prepunch and quickbuild kits go together much faster. In any case--what do you (generic you) do with your time after work? I could watch fooseball, hang out at the pub and become a drunk or build an airplane. Whether it is 2 years or 8 years, the time will pass, difference is that at the end of that time I will have an airplane, the couch potato will have nothing but an old TV and a big gutt. Anything worth doing is worth taking the time to do it right and airplanes are the only really worthwhile pursuit in life. J
