The radiator is dirty in between the fins. The radiator can look clean and still be dirt in them. Get to where you can shine a light straight in and I bet you will see dirt.

I agree with JerryG . I used a toothpick and blow gun to clean out the fins . Makes all the difference . Try the trouble light thing to check it . You'll be supprised .

If your radiator is in the back and the battery is "in front" of it, remove the battery and clean that area. On my BX 2200 I found that there was a bunch of S*** behind the battery because of the suction created by the fan......I had a beginning heat problem and once I removed the battery and vaccuumed the radiator....temp dropped right down to normal. Hope this helps!

I posted the following on 9/1/04, hoping it would help anyone else which may be having this problem.
Two weeks ago I noticed my coolant ran out through the overflow valve on my BX22(210 hours). I had mowed about 3 acres and never noticed the temp gauge higher than usual. I always clean the screen under the steering wheel and the (pull out) screen in front of the radiator when I see any type of buildup. I didn't get a chance to check everything before my next mowing. I mowed about 2 acres and noticed the gauge just a bit higher but not to a point which worried me. I turned off the mower and again lost more coolant(which did not overflow while I was mowing). This is when I knew I needed to check things out more carefully. Both screens were clean but I took them off regardless. I found my radiator totally blocked with fine grass and dust approximatley 4/16 of an inch. I haven't checked the manual to see for any detailed info to check for this blockage (it may be in there); however, I cleaned this thoroughly and haven't had any trouble since. I just wanted to put this information out for anyone who doesn't have time to clean every single ity bity part of their tractor before washing, waxing, buffing, armour-all the tires, clean the grass off the bottom of the MMM then polishing the bottom of the MMM and painting with vegetable oil or (that paint some of yall have used from TSC), greasing all moving parts and kissing your baby good night. I wish I had that kind of time but I don't. Yall have a good day and keep the shiny side up, of course some of yall have shiny tractor bottoms too.

You don't want to do this if you have an aluminum radiator..........Spray some of that cheap $1 a can oven cleaner in the fins. Wait about 3-4 minutes. Than wash out with the garden hose. The black dirt will flow out like crazy. Rinse everything off good. AGAIN don't do this on an aluminum radiator.

I cleaned mine up very good yesterday morning. i noticed this weekend that it didnt cool as god as usual even after i would clean the screen. i use a engine cleaner from wal mart with my air compressor and a little soapy water. then rinse it with a water hose.
it's pretty amazing how much trash gets between the fins.

Now i haven't tried this on my tractor yet but i use DOW bathroom cleaner on my vehicle engines. it will flat amaze you how well those scrubbing bubbles clean your engine. it has to be DOW i have found. a used car dealer gave me that trick and boy does it work.
I would bet it would work on a radiator.
