Rather than dishing out for a new post hole digger, I found a decent used one that needed a little TLC. It's a BL80A, made by Auburn Consolidated Industries for Kubota.
Getting the gearbox separated from the boom took a little persuasion, the pin that holds it in was rusted solid in the sleeve that goes through the gearbox ears. If you ever have one of these apart, you'll see what I mean.
A little rust on the upper tapered roller bearing, probably from condensation after years of sitting outdoors. I replaced both tapered rollers, and the ball bearing on the input shaft. Washed the case out, checked the seals (still flexible) and gave it a coat of paint and fresh gear lube. Looks good and works like a charm.
