Kubota RTV900 Sightings or Demo's ?

Re: Kubota RTV900 Sightings or Demo\'s ?

Wow where do I start the justification. There are quite a few justifications for ours. First off let me say that the last Gator we bought was a 6x4, fully loaded, for only $7100. In two years the one we just sold had almost 300 hours on it. I sold it for $6200. For two years and 300 hours of worth I paid $3/hour for it.

Now what did we do with it. Well first of all use it most everyday to check cattle and horses. If we need to doctor or move small calves it works great. With the amount of ground we have we have to cover alot of ground. It's great for going around all the pastures, fields, etc. as general transportation checking, working, and hauling different things here and there. It goes places the pickups won't and where it's cumbersome to take a tractor not to mention the gator is safer and faster doing it.

For fixing fences we put all of our stuff in the box and go. When stringing wire we run it up and down the fence lines moving people, materials and wire back and forth. The Gator is my choice above all else because there is almost zero impaction on my pastures and hayfields. In the summer if I'm out in the fields I use the gator to go back and forth to the equipment. My girls can bring me things, tools, lunch, etc. in the back and they're very safe driving it. We use it haul haybales out to feed horses in the winter and summer.

One we have hooked to our smaller manure spreader and twice a day it we clean stalls with it and the little spreader and spread over the pastures. No way I could make this work with a tractor as it's too big and cumbersome. We use them for irrigation in the summertime. We can carry all the parts for the sprinkler systems in the back and extra tubes, repair material, etc. And you can drive them most anywhwere as they are very easy on the ground.

We use it constantly for harrowing. We've got a couple harrows for dragging the arenas and the pastures when we rotate cattle. I can also send my 6 yo out on it periodically to just run around and go over manure piles and not worry about her at all.

Around the house it's used for many things. We use it to put mulch around the trees in the summer, move snow in the winter, haul firewood, haul tools, etc. etc. We take it hunting, use it to exercise and move horses, just alot of things. There are alot more things that we use it for as well. No way I would want to put all the hours on my tractor doing all those things and it wouldn't do all those things nearly as well or as fast. No doubt on our places the Gators and the Mule are the most used equipment we own.

Re: Kubota RTV900 Sightings or Demo\'s ?

CowboyDoc,
Now it's clear. I'm so used to many of the folks I converse with here being kinda like me...just playing with tractors and misc. equipment as more of a hobby...a way to unwind...the 'gentleman farmer' types.
I completely understand their real value on a true farm/ranch. When I asked the question about 'justification', I had a picture in my mind of guys who sit behind a desk 40 hrs a week, then go fire up their 'toys' on the weekend (uh, that would be me /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif).

Even though I don't have fences to mend, cattle to care for, and only 3 acres of land, I would still love to have a mule, RTV, etc.

The best rational I can come up with is that my son (9yr old) is badly wanting to take up deer hunting. That might be my ticket....we CAN'T go hunting deep in the woods without something big and strong and reliable to pull that 10 pointer out, huh??? My approach to the Mrs: "Our son will be grown before we know it. Mom, you CAN'T deny your only son the RTV9000 that he so badly wants so that he can spend precious quality time with his dad before puberty sets in....."
Think it will work? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think unless it is our business and it's discretionary income who cares if you can justify it or not. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Heck alot of things we don't need in this world but they sure are nice to have.

Re: Kubota RTV900 Sightings or Demo\'s ?

CowboyDoc,
I agree...Those things in life that make you happy/content cannot be justified in monetary terms.
My wife? She's expensive, but I couldn't make it without her taking care of me.
My kids? EXTREMELY expensive...but priceless.
My 'toys'? Just icing on the cake. These toys/tools will not bring happiness alone....they can only add a little to the richness of life that family brings.
Be sure to squeeze your better 1/2 on this valentine's day and tell your kids how much they mean to you !!!!
Now, that's truly PRICELESS!
Roger

AMEN!

I think you will have a hard time justifying a utility vehicle for jobs on 3 acres. Once you get it, you will find many, many ways to use it for recreation for your family. One of the things I like about them is having at least one other person seated beside you as you travel. Unlike ATVs which are single person operation, the utility vehicle is great for more than one person. If you get one, don't be surprised if your wife ends up liking it as much as you. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Kubota RTV900 Sightings or Demo\'s ?

Have you gotten your RTV yet? I just sold my "worksite" Gator with the intentions of purchasing the RTV worksite model with the dump and winch, and heavy duty tires. I'd really be interested in what you think of yours if you have gotten it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Kubota RTV900 Sightings or Demo\'s ?

Welcome to TBN! Yes I got the RTV, today in fact. I have posted pictures in this forum under another thread. I really like this machine, it was made to work. Give me a few days to give it a good shakedown then I will give you my assessment of it.

I have put a few hours on the RTV but I still don't have it set up for my tools yet. It is not perfect but darn close. There are a few things that I think Kubota needs to address. One sore point for me is the oil dip stick. You have to raise the bed to check the oil level. I like to check the oil before I start the engines on my equipment. With the RTV (units with a power dump bed) you have to start the motor so you can raise the bed to check the oil. This is closing the barn door after the horse got out.
They should not charge $120 for a plastic glove box or $169 for a plastic storage box, this is way too steep in price! The RTV in my opinion needs a tachometer! I don't believe they offer one, but I will install an after market one.
If you are going to be working in soft conditions (mud) you might want to consider a different tire then the work model tires. You should go to a self cleaning tire with deeper and wider spaced lugs. The RTV has a light foot print and is gentle on lawns but you can get it stuck. I would recommend a winch to help you out when there is no one around to assist you. I have a wireless remote, Ramsey 3000lb winch ordered, but I am still waiting for the winch mounting plate from Kubota.
This thing has amazing power and takes to slopes like a squirrel up a tree. For a large utility, it slips through the woods quite well and has a short turning radius. Utilities are not suppossed to have any recreational value (according to some in other forums). Somebody forgot to tell me cause I am having a blast driving it!
The RTV is a great value for what you invest in it and is a tremendous work vehicle. I would not hesitate to buy another one!

You can put the hydraulic lift lever into the float position and lift the bed manually. Yeah, those accessories are a little steep in price. The winch mounting kit is ready to go and should hit your dealers any day now. The HDWS tires are good off-road tires and the ATV tires are probably the best in muddy conditions.
