I thought about renting a backhoe also. I need to check out what's available in this area and the costs involved.
I live in West Central Ohio right in the middle of some of the best farm ground in the midwest, but for some reason 3 long-time tractor dealers in this area have gone belly up in the last several years, one just last month. The only dealer we have left is a JD dealer. The Kubota dealer that was about 20 miles north of here, now only sells NH and Agco tractors. The pickings are kind of slim right now.
I think a mid-size compact is what I'm looking for, and if I do decide to get a backhoe, I will have plenty of time to do the digging, so speed isn't a real factor. Besides, I'll get more seat time, and that can't be all bad, right? The way farm implements hold their value, I figure I can buy a used backhoe, use it for a few months, then sell it for close to what I paid. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.
