Kubota stalling not breaking chipper shear pin bolt

I've only ever seen grade 2 bolts too. I don't have a chipper, but I have a cutter that has a shear bolt. The cutter is 6 feet and the tractor is 70hp, so it eats those bolts like candy. They're cheap though.

Shearbolts can be any design spec for which there is a bolt made, depending on application. Without knowing the machine's shearbolt specification, we can't say whether the grade 5 was correct or wrong. Under the circumstances, using a grade 2 bolt seems to be a better match for the input HP.

We have a Kubota L4310 HST (35HP @ PTO) and it powers a Salsco 627Xt(6-inch w/ hyd feed). It does slow down when feeding a 4" maple or oak, but you can hear it slowing

Are your knives sharp? Dull knives take more HP.

I have a BearCat chipper on my L3400 and have killed the engine a couple times. It just flat runs out of horsepower and I think that is what is happening to you. Brian

I have BX62 and have stalled my Case DX45 a couple of times with it. I was chipping 5-6" dry pine. I have yet to break a shear bolt. Sharp knives and proper adjustment are important. You can download the manuals at Parts Books, Manuals & Instructions - Wallenstein

Thanks, I feel safer that I am not going to destroy my tractor with the #2 shear bolt,the #5 was just too strong for my tractor to break. Sharping the blades helped too.
