Check the center seal in the steering cylinder.

Would this mean that our free spinning steering wheel moments should happen only when the front wheels were pointing straight ahead, or maybe at full turn might indicate an end seal?

Don't know if this may be part of same problem, but sometimes, when have extreme load on front end and trying to turn, there is a pop & jerk on the steering wheel, before it proceeds to act normal.

Probably feeling the roller bearings breaking out there cages and being ground up by the gear teeth in the hubs. :D (I'm just joking...)
