Don't know about the gasket but on mine silicon worked well.:D

If it has a chain you can buy the components to splice it. You should also check the chain for overall wear.

Seems I recall a measurement of 12 inches pin to pin and if its much over a new chain is best??:confused:
[This measurement may be for a specific size chain??]

Thanks. I'll have some silicon gasket in a tube when I remove the cover.

You may want to make sure that the slip clutch is still attached ie some tillers like yours had a slip clutch that was held in place with a shear bolt on the back side. Not saying this is the case with yours but would be a easy to overlook the simple.
Hope its a easy fix for you.

There is a plate on the back side of the "gear box" and I'll take it off and see what's in there. There is also a big cover over gear box stub and I'll remove it to see if a shear pin is there.
Sorry to post this and not report back on fix but I'm done tilling for the spring and going out of town in a couple of days. Will dig this thread back up when I fix it. Thanks for all input.

Is there a gasket that has to be replaced when I remove the cover and reinstall it? Want to be prepared to reinstall it before I take the cover off.

The chain cover on my Bush Hog brand tiller did have a cork gasket. I bought a new one before taking the cover off the first time, but the old gasket came off clean and I just re-used it. After 7 years, when I sold the tractor and tiller (and other implements) I gave the buyer that new gasket that I still had on hand.

Said I would report back when I fixed tiller. Reporting back, tiller fixed. I did take chain guard cover off and nothing wrong there. Was removing 4 bolts on the back of the top gear box when I decided to remove the cover over the area behind clutch, The shaft was not back into gear box. Tryed pushing the shaft back with no success. Then tried my persuader (light sledge hammer) and it slid back easy on the spline and then I saw there was a slot for a retaining clip to hold the shaft in place but no clip.
Stopped at Barlows and got a clip which happened to be in stock and Steve Barlow told Gary no charge.
Got clip on this afternoon.
I'm going to be ready to till this fall now or spring.

Glad it was an easy fix for you. I also repaired my tiller back on Saturday. I had a seal go out when i was tilling my uncles yard and soon to follow I heard metal grinding. :(:ashamed: So I finished it all up and finally cracked open the gear box. Found out the seal was bad, not a surprise, it held up well since it went through a bran fire, it did pretty good holding up for 2 more years after that. :) The bearing on the PTO stub was bad, probably because I had the top link on the tractor too short and the stress from the shaft eventually destroyed the bearing. So I pulled the back gear box cover off, pulled out the PTO stub and back bearing, and tapped out the old bearing. That is how i got the hollow gear box in my profile picture.:cool: After waiting 5 hours, my new bearing and seal was in and $75 and 45 minutes later it was all back together and fully operational. I have now used my tiller twice since then without breaking it.:) That is a new record since the old record was i broke it if I used it. :ashamed::laughing: Whenever I work on my tiller, there are two things that will always happen. I will have black hands from the gear oil and grease and I will take lots of pictures.

After putting plate/cover back over chain I squirted in a bunch of grease and will top off with gear oil as it settles. Gary at Barlows told me a wise mechanic told him that he always did this with his.
Looks like you and I have provided pictures of all the top and side parts for a tiller in an exploded view.:)

John, The splined shaft is a long way from the chain:eek: but now you will be familiar with how to access the chain!:D:D

Tilled a small garden last year and won't be doing any this year soooo time to let the good working Kubota tiller find a new home for $750. You got the money, I got the tiller and I'll trade with you.
