Buying Advice Kubota vs JD...newbie with 80 acres

Sorry about the tough, lengthy reads guys. Unfortunately, I have "nothing but time" for the next several moths. I promise to keep this one shorter. I also had my wife pull me out with the 8n a few times. She is not real comfortable with operating a tractor. I plan on remedying that situation over the next several months, as it would be very handy to have another skilled operator on our farm. We probably could have got on "America's Funniest Home Videos" the last couple times she pulled me out. This is more fun than watching TV or reading books.

Length of your posts isn't a problem for me, wolc123. But they would be easier to read if they were broken up into paragraphs every three or four sentences. A single long paragraph is more difficult to keep your place from line to line.

Thanks for your input, I find it informative.

wolc123, like GreenWannabe, I found your post interesting though I admit I skipped it the first time as I'm often too lazy to read long posts. I have also had to teach my wife to operate a tractor though I think she has pretty much topped out at our L5740, thankfully my sons live close and are very involved, I hope all is well with you or will be soon.

I especially liked the easy to grease Zerks on the JD.. I need to look into that!:)

I have a feeling there talking about the location of the grease zerks are easier to get too. You will find on big equipment allot of manufactures push this. Some of the big equipment even has its own automatic grease system.

My experience has been that it's usually works out better with the inexperienced or uncomfortable person on the stuck or broken down machine/vehicle and someone who knows what they're doing on the "tower". What do you all think?

Thanks for the advice there downslope, and I will try it that way next time. I am trying to get her some "tractor" lessons, but the extremely cold winter we are having here in Upstate NY, is making that very difficult. Luckily, since getting the 4WD, JD 4120, (10) years ago, I am getting stuck much less than I used to. It is only with our other (5) 2WD, no loader, tractors that I have gotten stuck over the last 10 years. I am amazed at how easily I can always pull myself out wit the loader on that 4120.

hey newbie, I spent a lot of time looking at tractors and doing the comparisons. Kioti ,Kubota , and JD all offered good machines and 0%. I have 100 acres in the Ozarks and wanted a good utility tractor with bucket , box blade , and landscape rake , I built a set of forks with quick release. 4 wheel drive is a must. I have a driveway that is .8 miles to maintain and plan to log and clear the front 20 acres for pasture. I bought the John Deere 5045E and have not been disappointed yet. This tractor has very good quality and weighed more than its competition , weight means METAL , I like metal. The box blade is an 8 footer and the 5045E pulls it easily. I was dealing with two JD dealers once I decided on the JD. The dealer I bought from beat the other dealer by 900$. They also threw in rear tire loading , full tank of fuel , touch up paint that I will use to paint the forks , two JD hats , one for the Mrs , and delivery , about 80 miles. JD and Kubota have plenty of dealers for parts when needed. Hope this helps , Have fun be careful !

Finally decided on and purchased my first tractor. I purchased a Mahindra 5010 HST cab. Dealer installed a diverter valve for a grapple. Also purchased a 20' trailer, a quick hitch, a 6' MD cutter and an 60" grapple. :cool2:
