Geeze, since I started digging a hill for a new garage last December, my L-2800 has broken down three times. First, bolts broke off in the sub-frame of the loader. Second, a hydraulic cylinder shaft warped (now straightened and working again).

NOW............ the tractor cranked fine earlier today. I turned off the engine after a couple hours and it would not re-crank.

Here is what I did:

Hooked up charger. When I placed it on "50 amp boost," the meter showed a charged battery!! (What th' heck?)

With CHARGER HOOKED UP, the solenoid was clicking and all dash lights on, but engine would not turn over.

With CHARGER UN-hooked, no lights and nothing happened.

I cleaned battery terminals, checked all the fuses, and connections - - everything OK. I even tightened up a slightly loose belt on the alternator, but figured this would do nothing because it cranked fine earlier.

Battery is 5 1/2 years old. Tractor is 2009 model. I was going to replace the battery soon.

QUESTION: Should I try a new battery first? OR................is it the starter? .................solenoid???

What th' heck could it be??

Why would the charger meter show full charge, but when un-hooked, no dash lights come on? Is the battery suddenly "so-dead" that nothing works?

THANKS so much for reading this.

Take care, Bo in NC

I had a battery in my pickup do that. If we tried to jump it we had dash lights but it didn't have any power to turn the truck over. Luckily we were at a Walmart and bought a new battery and haven't had an issue since.

Have you check seat safety and PTO wasn't engage somehow.

Place your voltmeter on the battery terminals, take a reading (should be near 12.6 volts. Now with the voltmeter still directly on the terminals, have an assistant attempt to start the tractor. what does the voltage drop to? this will tell the tale. Anything else is guesswork. If I was guessing, I would say your battery is toast.. BUT that is a guess, not a fact.

One of the best tools I ever bought is a battery load tester...

It simulates a 300 and 600 cranking and in an instant I can verify battery condition.

Nothing better than having the proper test equipment when you need it.

kOua and others................battery was indeed shot. I guess it has been so long since I had a totally dead battery that I forgot it would not take a charge nor even start the tractor with the battery charger hooked up.

Put in a new Duralast Gold battery from Auto Zone that had almost 100 more CCAmps than the 5 1/2 year old original.
SHE FIRED RIGHT UP !!! So back to work !! At least it wasn't something more serious, thank goodness.

Y'all take care, Bo in NC

Nothing like happy ending. :)

How did you determine it was the battery? Lucky guess and replacing if worked? Or did you use a volt meter?

I am amazed at the number of electrical troubleshooting questions asked by people who seem to not own a $10 meter.

I see this is a failure of our education system. We just don't make any effort to teach people how to use these things. Unless they have an interest in electronics they never have any opportunity to learn how to use them. I have handed people meters, either analog or digital, and they don't have a clue how to use it or any of the fundamental principles of Ohm's law. But how can we expect them to know without any exposure?

I think a few day's in eighth grade science should be devoted to this.

I would agree with that.

We are too busy teaching about other crap than stuff that we can actually use in this world.

IMO, instead of teaching about Shakespeare, greek mythology, foreign language, etc. We would be better off teaching some life skills like financial literacy, survival, basic home repair, etc.

Not many people are ever going to need a foreign language, or need to know what the greek god of whatever is. But most everyone is gonna eventually own a house, need to know how to budget and manage money, etc

Agree that was once common knowledge isn't very common anymore...

Truly believe people like my grandparents and a lot of my very senior neighbors have these skills and they just are not being passed on.

My 90+ year old neighbors know how to light a pilot light, where to turn off the utilities... heck... all these women have little tool boxes with all the basics...

That said... unless you have at least conversational Spanish in California... you will have a very hard with many entry level or trade jobs.

I work in a Hospital and conversational Spanish is a requirement for employment in all of the private practice physician offices...
