Kubota Grand L-5040 GST, Kubota L2900 GST, also have a Case 1840 with loader, ripper teeth, forks, backhoe attachment and steel tracks.
L-5040 GST when I start it up first thing and go to put in forward it dies. If I go to restart it will fire right up but then die when letting clutch out to go forward. I've noticed that it is usually in the speed ranges above 4-6 and if I shift it down to 1 or 2 it moves and works as it should the rest of the day. Is there a issue where if it is in need of maintance service or a hour issue that would cause this? It has 1140hrs and 69 on oil change, thank you Rich

It is the tractor's safety systems which are shutting the engine down.

In your GST model two possible switches are out of adjustment or have failed (or wiring). #2 or #3.

The safety switch theory is most often the cause, but your gear range bit doesn't quite match. Is the machine stalling like it doesn't have enough power? Or just turning off like a safety is tripping? Working in a low gear but not high gear doesn't sound like a seat/clutch/brake/pto safety switch.

Seat switches are notoriously finicky. Put weight on a clutch to depress it & you lift off the seat a bit, causing the operator presence seat switch to kill the machine. I've had some recent issues with stuff getting jammed under the seat causing my machine to have somewhat similar issues out of the blue when bouncing over a bump.

This may sound really obvious but is your brake set or dragging?

Thanks for responding, and it acts just like the tractor just shuts off. On the digital dash it says service. But it will always fire right back up in neutral but when you shift to forward or reverse and let the clutch out it immediately dies. And it may do this for about 10 minutes then run as normal.
I did notice this weekend that if I held the rpm's up when shifting into forward that 90% of the time it would power through the shut off and be fine. I haven't used my pto and correct me if I'm wrong but the seat sensor wouldn't even allow the tractor to start even in neutral,as well as some of the other sensors correct ?

No it's clearly not any brake issue, as when parked I don't set the parking brake cuz I have the loader and box blade on the ground. And it is shut off in the neutral position.

Thanks for the info. Do you know the location of the shuttle switch by chance? And the tractor hasn't left me stranded and it always starts in neutral. It only has the dying issue when you put go to let the clutch out to move is when it dies instantly.

High gear, tractor cold, low RPM....just Sounds like a tall.

Not sure how the modern tractors actually "go down" with a stall having an ECU and all.

But It works fine in lower gears, and works in the higher gears if you give it more RPM.....certainly just sounds like a stall

OP is about to learn why gear and power shift tractors have all those speed choices. It's a GST, no need to start off in a high gear. Next stop; clutch failure.
