Took apart an L3710 today, would'nt go into mid range. The L**10 HST series with Hi-Med-Lo range tend to be a little difficult to change ranges unless you move the HST pedal a little to align the gears. A word of caution: Just move the HST pedal "a little" at low RPM- If the gears are grinding, that's too much. Found where med drive gears mesh -mushroomed over and preventing the two from engaging completely. Also found shift fork worn excessively, most likely from trying to force the shift. Granted, this machine operates out of an outside rental house and the repairs will most likely be covered under warranty..... Kubota makes a good machine, but the operator has to use some common sense and good operating practices to extend the life of his machine.
There are some operators that seem to think that for the reputation of Kubota and the price they paid for the machine, "It's indestructable" or that it should operate as flawlessly as there Mercedes. But the fact of the matter is, it's a machine that needs to be operated with care, respect and knowledge. I've been following and involved myself with this message board for quite some time now, the reason I have'nt registered allows me to be candid about my post's, which I think most of you guys understand. I also realize that if most of the people on this board were my customers I'd have alot less work to do. I've actually got alot of good "heads up" information on problems with the newer machines prior to customer complaints, by being involved with this board, I tell you stuff, you tell me stuff. It works out really well. Just wanted to share some info and thank you guys for all the stuff.......................

Kubmech,

I for one think that it is great to have a Kubota Tech as part of the group - thanks for spending the time here, and sharing your knowledge. I would think that you have a unique perspective v. tractor owners and even dealers.

I usually like to see everyone register, because it is nice to know where people are from and a little bit about their background. I sort of understand why you'd want to post as unregistered though. Maybe you could just sign with your first name so people will know what to call you. (Unless your first name actually is Kubmech. Boy, that would be a coincidence/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif).

Thanks for the tip. I have noticed the same stiff shifting on my L4310 (225hours). Here is what I do to shift the range selector:

1) Stop the tractor, hold with brake.
2) Slightly push to hst and release until the shift is effortless.
3) If there is any resistance shifting, start over...

Thanks,
-Roger

Kubmech,
Thanks for the post and information. I was wondering, could a root cause be shifting between ranges while moving? I ask because when I was trying out tractors my friend (yeah right!) tried shifting while moving, but using the clutch, and learned that's a "bad thing". You stated that the unit in question is a rental and I would expect that many people might assume you could change ranges on the go and as the users never have time to pass on knowledge to the next renter it would happen more than on an "owned" tractor.

What's your view on that potential?

That's a good possibility, considering the amount of different operators "learning" to use the machine.
