L175 Gear Lever Oil Leaks

Help...

I am getting oil leaking from on top of the gearbox where the shift levers go in. The oil level is OK. Any ideas ?

Neil,
You may have a "o"ring or the rubber boot which needs changing,not sure if you have a gasket in that area.

I had an L245DT which suffered the same problem and one day I happened to remove the plastic oil filler cap after running for several hours on a hot day to see if the oil was foaming. What I discovered was that the gearcase had built up some static pressure from heat expansion. Well I was pretty sure now the cause of all the oil around my gear shifts was just a lack of gearcase venting. The remedy was simple, I just drilled a small 1/8 hole on the side of the cross of the cap and cut a small piece of foam to fit snuggly inside the cap and act as a filter. No more mess around the shift levers.

This has happened to me before, i have an L185.There is a small "vent pipe" on the transmission. This is under the seat. It gets glogged by mud dublers and wasps. dirt the usual. the small ELBOW [PIPE] will screw out. you can try to clean it with a small wire{guitar string} etc. but taking it off is much better. It is a little tricky too find, but it is there. this will stop your shifter leak and all other leaks. The transmission builds up pressure, and blows the oil out the shifter handles, if not corrected, it will blow out other seals.any other question, just email me.pepper@digital.net
