L275 4wd problem...

My 4wd engages on my L275 but does not have any power. (If I roll the bucket to raise the front wheels off the ground they turn when 4wd is engage, but don't when its not). They really don't do much in action however. My buddy was using my tractor to plow snow up at his house today and stopped by an old timers nearby. The old timer said that the reason the bucket was so slow and that the 4wd isn't right is both tied to a bad hydraulic pump. Does this sound feasible? The 3 point hitch hyrdaulics are very strong so we are thinking maybe a clogged filter? Help, please....

On the hydraulic end......
Well, I changed the hydro fluid twice and filter as the fluid was milky. Checked the pressure at the port under the seat where the WSM recommends and found it the be 1000psi when the tph was activated. This is below spec for a L275 and shimming the pressure relief valve didn't change a thing. Looks to me like the pump is wearing out.

On the 4wd end......
Checked the front driveshaft in and out of 4wd. In 4wd, I cannot turn the shaft by hand. Out of 4wd, I can turn it by hand. Appears that something is shot in the front end. Will post once I figure it out so maybe someone else can benefit.

Its not clear if you have a gear or hydrostatic transmission or whether its the loader or transmission thats weak... or both.

The old timer has been hitting the sauce....the front wheel drive is completely mechanical. Check the front drive shaft splined couplings. Milky hydraulic oil can be replaced - do the filter too. 1000 psi is under spec but will still do a lot of 3-point hitch lifting. Change the fluid and put it back to work.

Its a gear transmission and the tractors two major problems are weak loader and not working 4wd. I'm pretty convinced the hydraulic pump is wearing out and that my 4wd problem is in the front end. Just need to tear in to the front end when the weather breaks and I have free time.

I believe the loader can be weak if the 3PH lever is incorrectly positioned.
Weak 4wd might be a clutch problem.

I will agree on the last post about the loader. I have the L235 which is the same tractor with a smaller motor. Mine has power steering as well and if the steering wheel is turned so the pump is working the loader will loose some of its power. Same is true with the three point if i have something heavy on the back and the lever pulled up all the way the loader is very sluggish.

I am on my seconf fluid change since i bought the tractor and it got better after the first change. I would start there along with replacing the filter. if the sight glass on the trans is fogged u, do that at the same time (its like 10 bucks for the part)


as far as the 4x4 im guessing you have some gear issues going on.
