After reading several threads lately (ie. Halloween Hay Rides, Firewood Hauling, etc.), I wanted to know what the towing capacity of the L3400. I was surprised that the max capacity was only 2200lbs. So, I have some questions:

1. The manual is worded, "The max. loading weight for trailer (without trailer's weight)." So, my L3400 can tow a 100,000 lb trailer as long as it only has 2200 extra pounds on it? Obviously this isn't within reason, but why wouldn't they just give a definitive number?

2. This number appears to be for the fixed drawbar. How would this number change if using a trailer type hitch on the 3pt system? Up, down, the same?

I don't know what their thinking on the first one.

Lawyers obviously wrote it since I tow a 1900lb trailer around with my little 2wd 15hp Mitsubisi tractor.
I don't have a owners manual for the Mitsubishi so I had to figure it all out for myself.
I would certainally hope my L2800 can tow more than 2200lbs...heck that's only 300lb difference.

I wouldn't have any problems towing more than 2200lbs with my L2800.

Most trailer weight restrictions are due to the braking power of the tow vehicle. From what I can tell the brakes on my L3400 are not over powering. This could become a problem going downhill with a hayride full of kids.

HST going down hill in "L" would be no problem.

To think that I tow my 2500 lb boat around with my golf cart! I guess I'd better not do that again! LOL

I've seen customers with loaded hay wagons behind them but much of it is how the tractors are set up with weights for a good balance. I'd think that in four wheel drive at lower speeds I'd trust one without to much worry, but!

Looking at some of the other posts I guess I'd be cautious.

I would like to know the true pulling force of the L3400. Anybody got a 50kip load cell laying around?

I am sure it can pull a heck of a lot of weight.

Example: My Jeep TJ is rated to tow 2000lbs....no kidding.
In 4Low it can pull a class 8 truck with a 53ft trailer hooked to it, I know I did it...street tires and never spun a tire, I have unstuck other vehicles weighing more than 2k also.
Then there's the reason it's only rated for 2k...at 55mph with 1900lbs behind it is not a walk in the park, it is a squirrely ride. That short wb is the killer there.

Your L3400 and my L2800 is not going to be going 10mph so their reasoning for 2200lbs is a strange one even if they are using the service brakes as their reason HST is a brake.

I don't currently have a trailer, so I have been using my rotary cutter to haul firewood. I just fill up the loader bucket, then pile wood down either side of the cutter and the middle. Then I leave the back tire on the ground as I tow it along. Works great, but I worry about overloading the 3pt when I go over a bump and the back tire comes off the ground. The tractor doesn't seem to care.

I use my truck to haul firewood sometimes and have had to tow it out of the mud with the tractor before. I bet that was "slightly" more than 2200 lbs I was towing then!

Happy Thanksgiving!
