Howdy,

Just took delivery of my L2800 HST.

I notice that it makes a loud ratcheting sound whenever the PTO is engaged and I decelerate the throttle back to idle and when I push the clutch in.

I didn't read anything in the manual that mentions this sound. I called the dealer and he says that this is a feature that allows the engine to decelerate independent of the implement attached to the PTO.

Just wanted to double check with y'all to see if agree and experience the noise.

My 3400 HST behaves in the same fashion. According to my dealer that noise is per design intent for the over-running clutch system; and does not indicate a failure or problem. However I believe that Kubota has instituted a warranty notice on this, and has a fix to quiet the noise to some degree.

You'd think that they'd put a big NOTE in the manual regarding this noise as it sounds like something is grinding up the gears.

Man, I dunno ... grinding up gears is a bad sound. I bought an overrunning clutch for my BX when running the hog just to take it easy on my pto brake. It sounds just like a ratchet, cuz it is, but nothing like grinding gears ...

Try disegaging the PTO without using the clutch and see if that helps.

Well, it may sound like a ratcheting noise, but to me, when I didn't know it was a ratchet, it just sounds like an aweful lot of noise.

Now that I know it's a ratchet, it does sound like one :) Just one of those things when you buy something and every odd noise makes you jump.

This noise startled me when I first got my L3400 HST. I called the dealer and they said it is normal and faxed me the mechanical drawings showing how it works. It is what Kubota calls a slant cam. It is indeed a ratchet that functions as an over riding clutch. It also provides the means engage/disengage the PTO. The new fix to increase the oil level will damp some of the sound but it will still ratchet.

What I do is lower the throttle slowly and while the engine is slowing I disengage without clutching. No noise this way. The slant cam is unloaded while the engine is slowing so it should be fine. If you close the throttle quickly you also get the noise. The noise means that the implement is over driving the PTO shaft.

Never engage the PTO without clutching and never pop the clutch after engaging the PTO. Let it out slowly at idle to spool up the implement and then throttle up.

Oh!, so this is a subsystem built into your PTO!? That's really neat. ... may have been around for years, I just didn't know ... which is the same line I use when the sheriff shows up /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Thanks for the link. I've printed out the pdf and will fax it to my dealer when I get closer to my 50 hour maintenance call.

Now if they'd just release an official warranty paper regarding the replacement of the 3ph valve with the 3010 valve.

Reading thru that warranty notice, it looks as though the repair replaces the transmission level sight glass with a dipstick?

Am I correct? Looks like a pretty significant repair to simply raise the transmission fluid level.

I looked at that also and I could see a problem with the dip stick getting bumped. The extension on the hyd fill port will get in the way of adjusting the seat height..I know this because of my TnT bypass line goes to the fill port and it is an extension that looks to be the same length and if I need to adjust the seat height I have to remove it.

Obviously the ratchet noise has been very annoying to several owners for them to raise enough stink for Kubota to try and shotgun this with a cheesy remedy.
I just hope this is not their permanent repair for this.

I went to my dealer today and they are ordering the kit. Figure I will give it a go. Did you guy's notice how much more fluid gets added? A little over seven additional quarts. Going to make that 50 hr. service even more expensive. I hope Kubota knows what they are doing. I asked them at the dealer how many L2800/3400 HST's they have sold. About a dozen and that was all they could get. Then I asked how many complained about the 3pt. jerk and the ratchet noise. Answer. One. Me. I am a service technician for a living and worked at a Ford dealer for 17 years so I kind of know how the games are played. Ford would issue a service bulletin but unless you complained about a problem you did not get the fix. Just business unless it is a safety concern then it is a recall. Still seems like a Mickey Mouse fix to me. Seems like Kubota is going on the cheap to fix this one. At least the valve was an improved part and did fix it. Brian

I wish Kubota would release an official service bulletin regarding the 3010 valve replacement for the 3ph, since I'll have mine changed in approx 40 hours.

Doing some reading on this board, it's apparent that not all of the dealers are knowledgable about all of the steps involved in replacing that valve (for example, they have to make an adjustment after valve replacement so that you still get maximum lift height).

A service bulletin with the steps listed out could help prevent little problems like this.
