I emailed the service bulliten to our web guy last night. It should be up on the site some time during the day on Thursday.

Thanks for the post. I will be visiting my dealer soon. Just wondering what the rest of you think. By covering the pto overunning clutch in oil, I agree it will be quieter, but is it really fixing anything? Is it a poorly designed part as some have failed or will running in an oil bath also make it last longer. I have a bad feeling that the "whole" problem with the pto clutch may not be fixed. I also hope I am wrong. What do the rest of you think? Brian

I have put 50 hours on the tractor now and haven't had any problems with the pto until today, It is making a clattering noise like it did the last time it went out, but it still is working. I have probably used the pto a total of 5 of the 50 hours that I have put on this tractor. Another problem is that I can engage the PTO with the PTO lever, but it will not disengage. I have to crawl under the tractor and flip the lever that the cable runs to by hand and then get back on it and press the clutch in before it will disengage. The pto will not disengage until I push the clutch in. When it does disengage the clattering noise stops. I am calling my dealer tomorrow. They had already closed when this happened today. This is the busiest time of the year for me and my business and there is no way I can do without a tractor for 5 weeks. I think I am going to request a different model of tractor. I feel now that buying this L2800 was one of the worst moves I have ever made. I wish I had my 2910 back. I used it the same way that I am using this tractor for three years and never had a problem with the pto. Does lemon laws apply to tractors? Because I have one!!

From what you describe I suspect that the PTO clutch is sticking and not sliding freely. If this is the case it may not engage fully either, which would definitely cause a noisy failure. When your dealer replaced the clutch he may have not fixed this issue.

I engage my PTO at idle and slowly release the clutch to start the PTO before opening the throttle. To disengage I slowly reduce RPM and disengage while the engine is slowing. I don’t use the tractor foot clutch to disengage. This prevents the noise from the overrun clutch. I figure when the engine is decelerating there is no load on the PTO clutch so it should be OK to disengage without foot clutching the tractor.

I have 43 hours. Most of the time is brush hogging. Blowing snow this winter may put more load on the PTO clutch. I hope if the clutch engages and disengages smoothly and completely it may be OK. If I have trouble after being so careful I’ll be looking at a L3430 or L3830.

I won’t switch to green or blue since it seems they are having a lot of electronic problems. I guess I’d call it “eProblems”. I don't want to roll those dice.
