L2900 doesn't start

Last Friday it started easily. Then after supper, I heard a small click when the key was turned to the start position ... but no cranking ... followed by a buzzing sound when the key was released. Battery good. Fuses good. Safety interlocks good (at least I think so since dash board lights come on fine, which doesn't happen if the clutch is not pressed). Since then I have tried a new controller and a new starter relay. Still same behavior. Seems like the buzz is coming from the key stop timer unit. Would this unit being bad prevent the starter from cranking? I didn't think so, but what else is left? Any diagnostic tips would be great! Thanks!

Remove the negative battery cable, clean and re-attach. Worth a shot...
