I need a tractor for medium to heavy mowing (60" rotary/"bush hog"), box scraper (5') and light to medium disking on about 20+/- acres of flat land. Which of the above would fit the bill best. I want to buy a new tractor that will last a lifetime...Thanks

You might look at a M4900 4WD tractor. It costs about the same ($19,500 or so)It will handle 6 ft equipment and comes standard with draft control. It can handle a fairly heavy disk (the only kind that work). You might also look into a good tiller as it will do a much better job than the disk, and can be handled with a smaller tractor. It takes longer, but leaves the land nice and flat when you are through. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hello gpw.
I was wondering if you have seen the specifications on all three L series models?

Cyllinders,HP, Weight,Pto, etc...
I do have some information that maybe interest, and if your interested just let me know.

Take care and have a pleasant afternoon.

Oh boy! Finally somebody asking a question about L-series tractors again! (I don't have anything against the B's, in fact, I'd love to have one, but I don't know much about them.)

gpw, I wouldn't go smaller than the 3410, for what you want. You're going to need the hp for the disking, if nothing else.

GPW, the L3010 only has 25hp at the PTO which is the minimum hp required for the medium duty model 12 Bush Hog. The medium duty Bush Hog 285 series requires a minimum of 30hp at the PTO.

I have an L3010 and drag a 2 gang 7 ft. 1950's vintage disk around 2 acres in low range only.

Have fun with your tractor shopping

I just bought a L4310GST. After doing my research for literally years I think i agree with Mark's comment that get as much HP as you can afford because it is never too much. You should get at least a 3710. With the extra power you can run a few hundred less rpm's while bushhogging and save wear and tear on your
engine, plus work it less hard on a number of other chores. I bought the GST on someone's advise and am happy with it. I refuse to try the HST for fear I might like it,thereby makeing me less satisfied with my present unit. Hope this helps with the decision.

Greg H - You know, I can't ever remember recommending that someone not look at the HST models, but I see your point. I think your case is the only time I'd ever do so. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Well once you buy you are better off not doing something to make you sorry you did it. learned that a long time ago. No doubt hydro is great i just don't want the facts to cloud my mind. All jokes aside I like the GST but I am sure that the hydro has advantages. The person that didnt like it for bushhogging found one of the real shortcomings of the GST. It is supposed to be at idle before the shuttle shift is moved. I compensate for that by using the clutch when i need to reverse and wait for the tranny to quit turning before changing directions. Slow but what else does one do.
If i were in the market again I would try the Hydro and all the different sizes. Once you buy too small you are stuck with it.

GPW, another huge, gigantic, monsterous, gargantuon, monumental decision would be the loader. Are you going to get one and if so why not just bump up to at least the L3710. The loader on it is rated at 1499lbs vs 1058lbs for the 3010 and 3410. I will even sacrafice some HP to get extra lift. Also since the L4610 came out, Carvers has some extra 4310's available. Then again, why not look at the 4610 with even more loader lift, or for even more lift look at the M series and if thats not enough you could, oh man I'm gettin carried away. Rat...

Remember this:
HST
Loader Lift
HP
in that order...

Greg H - I'll save my continuing "advantages of HST" diatribe for others, but let me know if you ever decide to get a new tractor! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

You make an excellent point about buying too small. I've had situations where my tractor was inconveniently large, but I was always able to get the job done. If it's too small, you're often dead in the water.
