My owners manual says the L3130 is rated for a 7' rear blade.
Before I go buy one, is the 7' rear blade wide enough to move the snow away from the wheels when it is angled slightly? Or is an 8' better or too big? Im virtually certain that I would be unhappy with a 6 footer...

Has anyone moved snow with a 7' blade with a tire width of about 66"?

I have R4 industrial tires installed on my L3130.

Tire width of 66"? I just measured mine yesterday and thought I measured about 72", which means the 7' blade I just got hangs out about 6" per side with no angle.
I was more concerned about a wider blade like an 8' grabbing too much snow, dirt, gravel or whatever I'm using it for and then losing traction or bogging the engine down. Also, aside from my parking area, my drive is only 12' wide, so I figured an 8' blade wouldn't follow the crown as well or have some of the blade not doing any work (I plow with the pivot pin out).

Mind you, I haven't put any of this theory to use yet /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
It must have gotten close to 60F today, which is pretty unusual for the shores of Lake Erie this time of year.

Check with your dealer and see what he says. I have a 7800 and just picked up a 6' blade which hangs out about 6-8" on a side. When I angle it it just barely covers the wheels but I don't think that's a big deal you just want to roll the snow to the side.

Dwight , I have a 7'blade . Even with the r4's set out as far as possible(72" ) and the blade angled ,I still can cover my tire print . John

I'm curious--what advantage does this offer?

Thanks.

It allows the blade to stay on the surface of the drive from side to side when the 3 pt is in a full down position and not be affected if the tractor hits a dip or bump or starts on a different grade. I don't think it would be helpful if you plowed a flat area like a paved parking lot, but on a drive with a crown plus rolling the snow past the edge of the drive where the ground (shoulder) drops off even more... it works quite well.
I have never had a problem with the blade NOT levelling itself off when raised either, but in the case of people that have a problem with snow sticking to the blade, then this could be a problem.

Howdy. Thanks to those that responded to my original post.

Yesterday, I bought a used, 7 ft John Deere, rear blade. It is a medium duty blade. I used it on the driveway and I think it'll do fine in the snow, too, if ever we get any of the white stuff this winter....kansas winters are not famous for their snowfalls....

The 7 footer seems to be a nice fit on the L3130.

OBTW, I can swing it around without having to remove the whole implement. I was concerned about that. The guy I bought it from complained about that and it is the reason he wanted to sell it.

thanks again.
