L3130 HST 4WD question?

Did the first 50 hour change on the Front Axle Case Oil, and could only get 4 qts. to go back in. Book says it holds 6.9 qts.

Parked on a level surface, removed both drain plugs, filler plug and overflow plug, let it drain for 1/2 hour (much grey in the oil which I assume is metal from the breakin period). Cracked both drain plugs while filling to bleed out any trapped air.
The shift was in 2 WD, could that have restricted the flow out?
Got me stumped.

I had the same experience with my L3430, it seemed to just need about a gallon. Not sure what the deal is. I'm a little confused about that also.

I've read a lot of posts about the manual being wrong on the amount of fluids needed. I thought that seemed a little strange that the manual would be wrong. Maybe that's it though. I will be interested to see what the experts think.

I had the same experience with my L 2800. No idea why.

Yup the manual is wrong on many of the capacities. I just install the corrected capacities.

I will be doing my 50-hr on my 3130 this weekend. After reading your post, I will note how much UDT I put in the front axle, and relay that to you. It sounds like the capacities in the manual might be off. I have not looked, but are there drain/fill plugs on the right and left side of the axle?

If there are two drain plugs on each side, what do you think about this approach to get as much fluid out of the front axle as possible?

1) Use the FEL to raise the front end off of the ground.
2) Pop plugs on one side of axle, drain.
3) Raise opposite side of front axle to let gravity help get as much fluid out as possible.
4) Repeat plug removal, drain process for other side

caylor - worth a try. I drained one side and when that slowed to a drip opened the other drain. Opened both the filler plug and the overflow plug to facilitate air flow/draining. Filler plug and overflow plug only on left side.

Would be a little handier if the drain plug faced inside rather then back, but suppose that's to give it some protection. I had some trouble with getting a funnel to handle the flow - drained some onto the blacktop /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I used UDT when I replaced the fluid. Gears are turning pretty slowly, UDT should be fine in my judgement, but then I'm no Kubota expert.

Will look for your results. Could have it done at the dealer, but I feel changing fluids, etc. is part of the "Tractor Thing", and if you have time allows you to understand the workings of your machine a little better.
