L3130 New or L3130 Used

Seems new for the warranty would be good, 46 hours doesn't seem like much though, but how long had he had the tractor? Because that might dictate how much warranty is left on the used? Is it transferrable? Plus with new he can get the tires he wants, the R1's, and the heavier duty loader....

What your neighbor wants and what his used tractor is worth may be two different things. Not trying to be cruel or taking advantage of a situation but . . .

Perhaps the question should be: what is the proper price to offer your neighbor for his used 3130 when you can but a new one for $xxxx.

Then, since it's your neighbor and he probably thinks you have some emotional support for his position, have your brother--not you--make the offer, comparing the new vs used prices, and let the neighbor think it over. And, I'd recommend you not be present when the offer is made. Don't be an emotional prop for either side. Make the introduction (neighbor to brother) and then walk out of hearing distance.

I have no experience with Grand-L series so can't offer an opinion on the price to offer--what about the rest of you folks?

Good Question Dave,

For me the fact that it is a gear tractor and doesn't have the 723 loader would cause me to be hesitant about buying this tractor. I think the resale is diminished because of this i.e. a greater percentage decrease in value compared to a HST tractor with the 723 loader.

I think the price would have to be down around $14k for me to be interested personally but $15k would probably reasonable for someone else.

I was leaning towards new but with my BIL the main issue is $16,250.00 vs $17,847.00

BIL will use this tractor to bushhog around 3 acres and use the FEL for small clean-up and help lift some small steel in his weld shop.

To answer a few other questions:

Neighbor has had this tractor less than a year.

I will not be involved in the final decision, just offer my opinion to BIL.

Yes, the 3430, 3830, offers more power, but so does 4330, 5030, TC 40, TC 48 etc. But he is only interested in a 3130. The 3130 is all the tractor he will need, believe me, I know this guy /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

L3130 is underpowered, this is basically a matter of opinion. My 3130DT has done everything I have ask of it. I could have bought the 3430 or 3830 but the 3130 was what I wanted/needed. I looked hard at the NH and JD but for price and what I wanted this tractor for, the 3130 was the one. Maybe someone needs to start a thread on the power of the 3130.

I will be buying utility this spring in the 60 hp +/- range and have not decided if I will sell the 3130 or keep it.

("It just seems to me that a Grand L with an FST would be like a Lexus with a stick shift") For the task I needed the gear was right for me. There must be alot of Lexus out there with a stick shift.

The zero down, 0% APR, 24 months is available for the B & L series tractors. Zero down, 0% APR, 36 months is available for the BX and M series tractors until 12/31/05. Hope this helps.

I thought the comment about the Lexus with the stick shift was kind of funny. In the world of true performance cars (and Lexus does have 'sport sedans' and a sports car), manual transmissions are preferred. I personally prefer a manual tranny on anything I drive. It pains me to no end that you can hardly get a full size pick up with a manual transmission.

I got a gear drive tractor because that's what I wanted. I prefer manual and I'm not willing to pay more for HST or GST and less power. So yes, gear drive is an economic reality for some, but for some of us it is also a preference.

And if I was in the market for a Lexus sports car, and it didn't have a manual tranny....I'd pass. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As for the stick shift thing, I've never owned an automatic (well, there was the '61 Corvair with the 2-speed PowerGlide, but we'll forget about that /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif). I miss my RWD Toyota Corolla SR5, great for "power slides" - now I have to content myself with yanking the e-brake in my (5-spd) Jetta, but it just ain't the same. My next car will probably be a BMW 540i 6-spd, but SOME DAY, I'm gonna get a big fat highway honker with an automatic and float down to Florida. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

In my defense, the only car Lexus offers with a stick is the "entry level" ($38K - you call that entry level?!) I.S., that's also their only AWD (but you can't get the AWD with the stick?!).

I think it might be worth noting at this point that it seems most posters here are guys who use their tractors for hobby related things or working (playing!) on oversized yards. Few if any are serious farmers from what I can see. I'd guess that 85% or more are white collar people who can afford (more or less) luxury tractors to enjoy a piece of property which is also part of their recreational or hobby use.

These things are toys for most of us. We find ways to justify their acquisition, then find more and more uses for them to make us feel better about having them, but face it, most of us could survive quite handily without them.

The dealers and manufacturers make and stock what sells. For the most part, this is a luxury market, like the extra car, truck, or SUV. Some like the thought of basic machinery, but most like all the doodads, so that's what's out there. When was the last time your local Chevy dealer stocked more than one "work truck"? Right now, I'm thinking/leaning toward a shuttle shift as being the best tranny for me, but most of the things in the size range I'd like are sold to people who do a lot of lawn mowing, for which an HST with cruise control is the hot ticket. As a result, there isn't much out there for me to consider unless I want to compromise on one thing or another. I guess that's where we all are. You look at who offers what and decide what's closest to your needs.

This is as I recall without digging it out.

Warranty is great, but if his is at 46 hours chances are real strong he'll never need it for anything of substance, while it's still in effect anyhow. Worthless other than -state of mind- if you don't use it. Almost priceless if you have a big issue though. So far mine has been used for (1) cross-threaded zerk fitting /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

The ask price sounds right on fair for what he paid. He would probably take less but I would consider his situtation in his favor, not against. No Santa here, but I can't kick em when they're down. Interest on a CD is fairly weak and if your doing a 2 year commitment that is free money that would be earning somewhere anyhow. Best he could do would be a money market and maybe a 1 year CD w/ half, assuming those funds are dedicated for tractor payments. Also, that new tractor debt could improve or worsen his FICO score. I'd be more inclined to check that unless he's debt free or nearly so and not rolling or entertaining larger debt in that period. That 'tractor debt" could negatively impact other financing that the lower "cash on hand" wouldn't. Just depends.

Tire, transmission, and loader preferences aside as not a determining factor?, I'd buy either. Flip the coin. Bring any of them in as determining and I buy new.

I dont' know how you could say that.... I would have to walk to the end of the road to take the garbage can out there and get the paper...use a wheelbarrow for the wood to bring it under the deck...a shovel to dig, goats to mow the weeds/blackberries down, my back to unload the truck of wood shavings/pellets. And just look at the thread where the guy uses his bucket as a cooler for beer? How else would he have had his party and made it through? I am pretty sure a guy could not own property without a tractor, or at least thats what I tell my wife, now make sure she doesn't read this... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif So on second thought I guess I will have to agree with you on most of your statements...except I am definetely far from white collar... I did have to wear one once though, I think it was for my wedding...Funny how wives have that effect....
