I had the same first impressions with mine. After I broke it in in the first 50 hours of varying the rpms, I now do loader work in either low or med range depending on the material and at about 2200 rpms.
When mowing with the bush hog I am at about 2400 rpm with the response dial set to quick so it will react quickly enough if you hit a tough spot or encounter a hill. If not it wont react quickly enough on the hydro and will drop you below 2000 rpms pretty quick and the power drops off quickly.
I don't know if it is me but I swear it has become considerably more powerful after about 70 hours. Maybe everything is now seated?
It will do more than you think as long as you don't ask too much from the hydro by using too high a range and getting close to the relief valve point.
