L3400 pto question

I have a new L3400 and what that means is that when you engage your pto and release the clutch half way the pto starts to spin. So in a nutshell when you want to shift gears you only have to engage the clutch half way down to change gears and the pto will continue to spin and not stop like if you pushed the clutch all the way down and disengage it.thunderworks said:

I assume your looking at the HST model. There have been noise complaints, and a few failures, with the ORC and the new models just have a non ORC engagement. If you press the clutch in with a mower attached you'll hear a racket that sounds like grinding gears. That's normal for the ORC. The newer models with the new engagement cam don't make the sound. I avoid the noise by pressing the clutch in and disengage the PTO at the same time. I have an older model. The live PTO allows you to change tractor directions with out losing PTO power.

ccsial - I was under the impression that your dealer swapped your PTO cams out for the new ones. Thought I was the only guy here with the old cams.
I do the same as you. I throttle down slowly before disengaging the pto. I might hear a click or two at most when throttling down and then do the clutch and the PTO disengagement at about the same time. I usually get a few clicks in before the PTO is disengaged.
I'm going to add an external ORC for insurance. I haven't had any problems with my PTO so far.
I do find it strange that the specs still say that the tractor has an ORC. It also begs the question - why was the ORC there in the first place?

My dealer said they would do the swap but I didn't want to tear the tractor apart. I don't use a tiller on this tractor and am hoping I'll not have a problem if I treat it right.
Who knows why they put in an ORC. Maybe because they always did it that way.

That is probably a sane decision. Sometimes one causes more problems trying to fix others. Sure didn't sound like the CAM replacement was a trivial thing.
