L3400 PTO Won't disengage

   / L3400 PTO Won't disengage #11
I have a l3400, a 2007 model and have had the same issue twice. Mine was not engaging once and disengaging during operation the second time. Both times I took the panel off and tipped the seat forward to lubricate everything. Each time it has worked good for about 100 hours or so. I think it's a poor design, but haven't found a better idea yet! If anyone has the permanent fix for this, I am interested too.

If there's a way to do it, the lever that's used for the non-hst models is a sure fix. No cable, no problems. A few members here have talked about trying to adapt something, but I've never seen results.

So its a HST only problem and they use a different set-up??

Explains why I never had any issues.

Yeah, the DT version has a boomerang-shaped lever to engage the PTO, no cable at all. Not sure what the GST version has..

Yeah it just seems to be the little tiny lever and cable setup that causes trouble. I am thinking there wasn't room on the floor to put the big lever like you guys have because of the hydro pedal being in the way, so the remoted the actuator with a cable up on the right hand side behind your hip. I never had any problem with mine, but I only had it for 2 years also.

Just checked my 2002 L3410 GST (with ~ 1000 hours), and there is a cable system from the pto lever. However I have not had a pto issue, so it must be luck or clean living......OK, luck, possibly helped by my habit of engaging/disengaging the pto only at idle speed.

The problem here is that the cable is PUSHED to disengage the PTO. The PTO lever and the bottom end of the cable has a coiled spring that is supposed to pull on the shaft and disengage the PTO. The cable PULLS the cable and the top to engage and the spring at the bottom is supposed to PULL on the cable. This spring is too weak to do the job. I replaced my broken cable (it breaks at the top because moving the lever at the top the PTO off position usually just bends the cable.). I spoke to the
techs at my Kubota dealer and they had no idea. There is no engineering change in the cable or bracket that will fix this. I made a tiny clevis and attached a small rod to project onto the foot plate so I can physically pull the lower lever to the front, disengaging the PTO. Again, replacing the cable will not fix this problem and at $50 or so for the cable and bracket, it quickly gets expensive and frustrating.

My 1st fix of this was to put a heavy duty ziptie around the lever and poking it thru an opening along the floorplates. I pull on the ziptie as I move the top lever to
PTO Off. this pulls on the cable and disengages the PTO. Later, I made a permanent solution using a small flat rod to pull on the lever. zipties only last about a year.

Goldendan, is there any way you take photos of your "fix" to help the rest of with this PITA!! Thanks for your time and help.
